Hello all.

Does anyone know if there is a publication/list of overnight rest stops that could be used by camper trailer / caravan / tent etc?

Particularly interested in SE Qld surrounding region. Inland Qld is pretty easy you just pull off the road.

Main roads have some info on their web site and they list about a dozen. There must be hundreds though.

Thanks

Free Camps Australia.

Pick it up at any decent Camping, caravaning shop. Possibly also available through your motoring organisation, NRMA etc.

Yes, Camps Australia 3 is the latest I think - which brings me to say "good on ya" to the lowlife who stole my copy somewhere in WA - be careful and put it out of site - I must have left in on my chair while I went to the loo - lucky our Hema road atlas has camping spots marked with little tent signs (most of them anyway) - though a lot of the spots are disappearing - just allowing day stops - or cutting down from 48 hours to 24 - and one at Bluefin in Qld - used to be 48 hour - now 24 hour - but of course some people overstay which prompts councils to cut them out - but at Bluefin they are doing some work at the front of the park area - which looks suspiciously like a caravan park! Anyone know about this?

Hi Shawn and Spade,

That book is actually available here in the Adventure Shop.

I suggest you have a look at the range of Camping Guides available in the Adventure Shop. Click here to view them.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me,

Spade,

I can't speak for the books mentioned above, but with the couple of "Camping in..." and "Bush camping with Dogs" books that I have is that while they are helpful, they don't cover all the places you'll be in, and they aren't always current.

You should supplement these by visiting the local information bureau a town or two before you think you'll be stopping. Just be sure to get there while they're still open!

Thanks Stuart,

Often forget the good old info centre. A very under used resource I believe.

Is this the one you looked at? I thought it had quite a lot on it. I haven't found similar for other states - has anyone else?

Yes this is the one I looked at.

I know of about 10 spots to overnight camp where I live and not one on the list. It can't be too comprehensive.

Slightly off topic but has anybody noticed that none of the driver reviver stops seem to be staffed anymore, even in school holidays? Is that a government policy or did the volounteer groups just get tired of doing it for nothing?

Yes we noticed that too - we always leave a donation when they are staffed. The best we came across was at a place called "Avon?" on the Barkly Hway just before the Qld border - the police have a set up there with a boiling urn, coffee and all the makings - toilet stop across the road, - they even had biscuits - for a gold coin donation - excellent we thought. Not staffed, but obviously loked after as it was spotlessly clean.
