OK, I know this is kind of a follow on from my earlier post, and I certainly have searched the archives, but my question is what sort of fuel economy would i expect from a 100 series with a naturally aspirated 4.2 diesel and a few accessories?

Also, what do they go like (1HZJ 105 GXL's) ? I'm looking at hiring one for a couple of days this week to find out for myself, but I'd appreciate any other input from owners here. The simplicity / reliablity aspect does appeal to me greatly, though the Hilux diffs and constant 4WD doesn't.

Just checked out the GU 3.0 and it is sooooo complicated, but definately cheap on fuel.

They do not have constant 4wd. They are generally quicker than the utes but not by a great deal. No 2 1hz go the same so it pays to take them for a drive. the diffs wont give you any dramas unless you are into backwards snatch recoverys or extreme uphill tracks that cause wheel lifting. I have only checked my fuel economy 1nce and it was 17.5 l per hundred which was mostly slow track driving and at least 200km of beach work

Hi V8Diesel,

My 1HZJ 80 series averaged 12.5 l/100km around town and 17.5 l/100kms when towing my 1.6T van. I know its not a 100 series, but I doubt there will be much difference between the 2 economy wise. It had 33" tyres (speedo corrected), 3" lift, full length rack and many other items that weighed it down compared to a stocker.

When not towing, I found the 1HZ fine to drive, either in the city or the country ie. not too slow, but overtaking required a bit of planning. But once the van was hooked up, a lot of paitence was required. Hills that are 5th gear in the 3.0TD GU were 3rd gear in the 1HZ. And thats with extractors and 2 1/2" system.

Now the funny thing is, I reckon the GU 3.0TD is better in ALL respects both on and off-road, yet I must admit my 80 series is my sentimental favorite of all the 4WD's I have had - go figure!!!

Cheers

Captain

Hi v8
I too have 100 series 99 model RV full time 4x4 .It has snorkel, extractors and two and half inch exhaust muffler etc.
I use 12lts per 100ks normally and 18/20ltrs towing 2.5 ton o/road caravan in all but the windiest conditions when it can go up to 22lts!
As said previously the performance is not brilliant especially towing but it does the job and I just like it. Had a pc prior to this one and the fuel figures were just slightly better but the performance was definately better! but not the comfort!
Hope this helps.

Morning...

I've got a 98 NA 105 Series, w/ snorkel, bull bar, rear wheel carrier, etc.... Weighs in at 3 tonnes, or just under.

I get about 10L / 100km out of a normal tank - with a few city trips, and a couple of Kurrajong runs from Sydney, up to about 13L in the bush crawling up things. We only fill up once a month generally, so you can see we don't do too many kms..

I also have the split-rims, so the tyres are pretty narrow. I think that helps with the fuel a fair bit. They seem great in the mountains near Lithgow and that. I rekon in its current setup it would have given my 03 Defender a run for it's money.

Next tyre change I'll be putting on either 235/85's or 255/85's, so the fuel may creep up a bit. With those tyres, slightly off-set rims, 3-4" lift, and a rear lockka, it should be almost unstoppable.

V8,

I have a standard - split rims & non constant 4WD - '04 100 Series for work. Drove it to Geraldton from Perth around 800 km return trip. Sat on 100 kph and got a reading of 12L per 100 kms.

My '91 GXL 80 Series 4.2L diesel with aftermarket turbo gets 14.4L per 100 kms.

Those figures with th eaftermarket turbo are really poor. You must drive with a lead foot. All of my 1HZ'z with QTM turbos get around 11 on the highway. You may need a dyno tune or a fuel pump adjustment. May save you a bundle over time.

I have a 2001 std cruiser(part time 4 x 4) with bulbar, winch, dual batteries, scrub bars and steps, 2 inch lift, spot lights, MTQ turbo, 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust running 265/75/16 tyres on GXL rims.

Just did a 1000km trip towing a camper trailer that weighed about 1 tonne loaded and got 14.3litres per 100. Without the trailer around town it is about 12L/100. It is need of a dyno tune too at the moment.

I have a 100 series 4.2 1hz standard, just bullbar and towbar. Drove from Perth to Brisbane last year and average 12 -15l/100kms (insome areas on Nullabor was cruising at 140kph), also went thru Esperance and Arid Nat. Park etc. so economy is not bad. Bit slow in taking off...but a good all rounder.
cheers.........

What the story with other users with 90 model 80srs after market turbo fitted.Iwill run the fuel right out and report just what it returns after I fill up.to the same level.Keep watching in the next week or so.I was also cruising on the freeway speed 110 +
