Greetings, I read with interest Cons enquiry (19 July 2005) and subsequent responses about taking a Suby Outback to Fraser Island. Our family are heading up to the Sunshine Coast in our Outback (from country Victoria) later this month and are contemplating a day trip (early start) to Fraser Island (from the
Rainbow Beach end) and would appreciate some advice on where we could realistically expect to get to and what anyone would recommend having a look at.
By way of background having just registered on this great site I spent a considerable amount of time living in Victorias East Gippsland region so I would be quite happy to share my knowledge of the 4WD (had a Jackaroo back then) tracks in that area.
Regards to all, GaryM.

Dream on Gary...its more than likely 'possible'...but a reality check would suggest I say to you ....get real ...an Outback is not a substitute for a high clearance 4wd ..on
the beach..no probs , but the tracks to and from..
well..maybe , but ...get the drift ?

With a little caution, why not take the Suby.
Bit of a grind getting on and off
the beach, but no worse than any other
beach access point. Inland track from the ferry at Inskip shouldn't be a problem.
With only a day to explore, I wouldn't be trying too many of the tourist tracks across the island. Particularly if busy they can get chewed up.
I'd do a run up
the beach - Maheno,
Eli Creek and up to
Indian Head. Wouldn't try going around Indian in the Suby.
Have a good trip - with care shouldn't be too hard.

If you do it.. do it only on low tide and stick to
the beach... personally, If thats all your going to do, Its a bit of a time waster... best parts of the Island are inland and you're likely to find your self stuck or damaging your Outback. If your coming from the Sunshine Coast... just go to
Tewantin.. take the ferry across the
Noosa River and drive up
the beach from there to
Double Island Point... what you see from there is much the same as Fraser, just dont attempt to go across to
Rainbow... get to the headland and turn back befoer the tide comes in.. you should be fine with that trip.

Gary
We normally go to Fraser every year and this Friday is no exception (14 days cant wait). Last year I remember seeing a Forester being driven all over the eastern side, even up to Cathedral beach resort which has a couple of soft patches. He even had a 50 litre fridge in the back! I asked how he managed, he said the trick was to pick the track or line which he was going to use and stuck to it, and when he got going he would give it stick. He was also running his tyres at a fairly low pressure (cant remember).
I would stay off most of the inland tracks as they can be quite soft, but if you careful you should have fun. I have seen allsorts of vehicles on Fraser, some which I would have thought would never have a chance, but normally it comes down to the driver and little bit of planing and common sense.
Cheers,
Angus

Hi Gary,
I drove an outback to Illuka on the 10 mile beach. Had not a problem. Getting on & off
the beach sucked in a lot of sand into the aircon cooler but apart from that its ok.
Applying the same application to Fraser, the only problem if going thru inskip is the soft sand to the barge and off the barge on Fraser Island side.
The trick is not try to stop in the soft sand to and off the barge. Low pressure is the way to go.
On Fraser travel 2-3 hrs on either side of low
water otherwise the low clearance will really try you.
I now have a100 series, but mate, give it a go, best to arrive early morning at low
water and back to barge at low
water.
Have fun.....cheers.......
