We just came through the Gunbarrel 2 weeks ago to Giles
then through to Airs Rock
Good camp ground at Giles at the Road House but you have to pay
There is a camp ground at Docker River (we didnt go in to have a look)
As far as I know you are not allowed to camp much else with the Native Land
You may need to apply for permits to travel the road ???
There are some good photo opertunities around the mountains and laciters cave.
Plenty of corrigations but not real bad.

2 years ago Docker River was excellent. Flushing toilets and running water.Small charge - honour system. Ca't remember about permits but don't think so. Camping at Lasseters Cave is no longer permitted.

Cheers,

Gordon

G'day fellas
Permits are required to travell the great central road between Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park boundary to the WA border via Docker River.
Under Special Conditions
1) Camping is only permitted at Kaltukatjara Campground.

Under Genral Conditions.
2) You are NOT PERMITTED to Camp overnight or light fires while on Aboriginal Land.

I've quoted these conditions from my permit application forms that I got for travelling the Gunbarrel Hwy last July. Hope this helps.
Safe travells

We passed though the area a number of years ago and if I remember correctly you can camp where ever you like in the native permit areas so long as you are not more than 500 meters out on either side of the road. We camped just off the road and as there was very little traffic day or night it was good, quiet & comfortable camping.
There are plenty of good camp spots every where!

50 metres it is

I don't apply for permits. These are gazetted roads and I am an Australian Citizen and drive along these roads when I want to. Permits are a load of nonsense.

There is a way side stop about 45km east of Warburton now with a toilet and a rain water tank. It is about 1km off the road.

The Trek Notes section cover what you need to know about his route, pretty much.
Trip Planning/Trek Notes/Western Deserts/Great Central Road

Docker River campsite is great - running water at each campsite AND a flushing toilet are luxury items you value at this point of the journey. Trek notes say firewood is supplied - we did not find this correct and always found it good practice to load up the rack about 20kms out from a designated campground.

If you camp west of Warburton instead of east, you'll not get into any issues with the legalities of camping - which is not allowed according to my permit information in any Aboriginal Land. We stayed at a great spot off the road at S27.05907 E125.18446 near Rockhole 2 on the trek notes. Few hills, tracks off the road, plenty of timber, far too many exposed butterflys tho. Burn your loo paper people.

Next day we made it through to Docker River.

Tim
