(Sorry, this is my last post for today...I promise...)
I have watched a number of trucks come by my office thismorning with Ford
Explorers on the back heading down to the docks. They all had big
orange EXPORT stickers on the windscreens, and had all the plastic on the seats inside. They looked stock standard brand new.
Why would they be being exported from
Sydney?

Another priceless quick comment from truckster!!! LOL..... But I reckon you might be right mate.... they are a nice enough CAR, just don't take 'em off the bitumen, we have had a couple lately join our club, they get stuck on our training track! (Not kidding here, one had to be winched out!!! ...LOL)

That’s right know-body want’s them. That’s why they are the biggest selling SUV in the world. Notice I said SUV the new ones are not made for off-road never were never will be I have driven a 2004 V8 explorer and I thought it was grate, but would I take it off-road No way and I wouldn’t buy one either. But they seem to suet some people Who tow boat’s or who have no plans to go 4Wding or may do the odd beach or gravel road in there travels, and for that prepose it is perfect.
Also you should see what some of the yanks do to the earlier model
Explorers Pre 2001 some of them would make your tuff Jap 4WD bleep .
Anyway back to the point, they are built in ford’s right hand drive factory in Brazil and maybe ford Australia is doing something with then now as
well.

I admit to having defended one recently on a club trip... we had been driving a track and reached the bitumen again... the Explorer's owner called me to say he was having a little trouble getting it back into 2WD.... I laughed and asked how long had it been since he had taken it off road and he said 3 years!! (He also has a Hilux which is usually what he brings on trips.) I told him the problem was he had excited the Explorer and it wanted more 4WD'ing.... not 2WD'ing!!!! LOL...
Very nice car though!

Other countries, including Africa,I believe, have reconised the value and quality of this great Australian made product and are now receiving shipments of the RHD version..Ford Australia engineers right through to assembly line workers, can, indeed be proud of their contribution to this great vehicle and assistance in the balance of payment for good old Australia..Blindly buying Japanise vehicles won't exactly help Australia's financial situation..Most people think they are buying "quality" jap rigs these days, yet,in fact, the 4x4s are actually made in Thailand etc using established names.!MPG:6!

Territorys are being exported to South Africa (they can't get enough of them) but since they're made in Vic don't know why they would ship them from
Sydney anyway.

I agree with your sentiments and I think many others do on this
forum. Have a look at the number of posts recommending (say) GME radios in lieu of imported units.
In the case of GME products, supporters are always quick to say they are quality products and the service is excellent. So GME radios meet their stated purpose admirably, are around the price of the imported unit and GME bends over backwards to help would be buyers and those who already own their products.
When spending hard-earned $, there is always the question of value for money. Isn't that what the market is supposed to be about?
I don't think people buy imported cars because they are blind to the virtues of local ones.
What prevents Ford
Explorers being the market leader in OZ? After all they have the advantage of not having to ship cars to Oz and no luxury tax. Ford executives are paid millions more than GME executives, but what lessons could GME managers teach the overpaid Ford execs?

I agree with the Australian made sentiments raised here, but only to a point.
When Ford Australia build an Explorer (or a Territory or whatever it is that is being exported, although AFAIK the Explorer is definitely imported) that will go the
places my Patrol does or a'Cruiser will, or even a (gasp!) Landy..... then I will look seriously at buying one.
I will happily buy Asutralian every chance I get, as long as the Australian product is as good as or better than the imported one!

The Territory connot be compared with the Patrol or Cruiser, different class of vehicle. The Territory cannot go where those vehicles dare to tread but on road it makes them look like a duck out of
water. Horses for courses.

Yep... have to agree with you there Ray.... but the post above (somewhere) was sayin' "buy Australian" instead of the Jap stuff.... my point was is there an Aussie made fourby that will do what a 'Cruiser or Patrol will do?? With as much ease??
I have been in an Explorer at our training track.... very comfortable "nice" car, just not really suited to off road IMHO
The Patrol.... great off-road, but not really suited to long distance highway driving...
Of the two scenario's, the Patrol suits me best.

Agree there Brian. My slightly modified 98 Explorer will do most of what I need it to and occasionally I may need to think about how I am going to get thru a section and take a slightly easer path, or say oh
well I will not get thru that. But I think that will help me in the long run as I am only
young and still have a lot to learn I think by having a slightly less capable 4WD it will help me to pick better lines and require me to use more concentration and skill to get thru, rather than yeah iv got 3½Ft of ground clearance and 33-inch muddy’s ill just barge thru.

A very good point Exploder.... and you WILL be a better driver for it. I know from experience that my Patrol (and I have seen others do the same thing) usually just drives itself and I don't have to think too hard about he obstacle at all. But I am not a good enough off-road driver to go back to a "less" (for want of a better word!) capable vehicle and learn more. It suits me that the Patrol will do what I ask of it with very little fuss!

True, substitute Territory in my post above.
I don't think Ford or GMH are all that interested in quality and they are certainly not interested in what the consumer wants.

Hi there got to agree with you there ev700, got a commodore bought brand new 01 model, had about 4 warranty claims 4 oil leaks and still gets moisture under neath at least it's stopped dripping, that was only the engine by the way not including the high pressure line on then power steer that was leaking, and this was on a car that has only done 55000klm up to now, that was at about 30,000klm. My old japanese 1989 diesel hilux d/cab does not drop a bit. Says it all Have a Great day Regards Vitara

HOLDEN
H= holes
O+L= Oil leaks
D= Dent’s
E+N= Engine noise
Sound’s like he got a Holden to me, and remember it’s only just “Holden together” as well.
Hold the Ford criticism I already know it all (:

what you are seeing are Trans shipped cars that are still under bonded cargo.
As with most exported vechiles its not common for vechiles to be transported between docks to go from international sips to coastal traders.

Its all academic anyway as the Explorer is being discontinued and no longer to be sold in
Australia. An absolute failure. It may have have been the most popular 4wd in thr world but that was because 99.9% of sales occurred only in one country - the good ole US of A. A dud everywhere else.

They would sell even more Ford Territorys if the fuel economy were better - even though it's smaller, it uses more fuel than the 3.8V6 Pajero.

Sorry Garry have to disagree what about Canada, Mexico, Sth America, Iceland, Greenland, and American Samoa, very popular in Sth America and Canada too.
Actually there's a place in Sth America that makes Snorkles for them, but only for the local market.

Now on my second new Explorer. First a 6, now an 8. Owned two Patrols GQ and GU before and yep the Nissans beat the Ford handsdown in the rough. But for the 95% of the time (doing roughly 75K pa) the not so "popular"Explorer is a far more comfortable, pratical and easier car to drive (especially around those ruddy tight city car parks). Heavy 4wding a real bugger though in the Ford, with stupid tear off mud flaps ($220ea replacment) and not great side steps (clearance not too good) however most of the underbelly is well protected. Wouldnt take it across the Simpson alone. Still dont mind feeling comfortable and having a good drive for 95% of the time, whilst the "real blokes" are pushing their buses around
