Hello Melissa - We normally stay in cabins.
Places on the GRR are from $135 per person which is a bit heavy. Trev

Sorry can't help you with that Trevor. We camped along there in May/June this year and to be honest we found the
camping fees everywhere pretty dear so I doubt you'll find any bargains. The station owners and tourist operators have a small window of opportunity to make their money during the dry season.

ACCOMMODATION....
as in paying to stay somewhere
when you could really be staying at one of the beautifull waterfalls or rivers on the GRR
I stayed at the river
camp sites at each end of the GRR and at one of the pools in the centre area, take your time there are plenty of nice
places to visit if you want to go and look.
Ask the locals for the good local info on their special
places, they leave them off the tourist maps 'cause nobody is there to collect money as you enter :-)

Hi Trevor.
Definitely visit
Bell Gorge as it is my pick of the lot I visited a couple of months ago. Cost about $18 per night. Cold showers available and big campsites with a good
ranger who keeps the place really good after some of the visitors have scattered their rubbish around.
Drysdale River Station as from there you can go up to the
King Edward River which is a top spot for
camping. They also let you leave a camper trailer there if your going to be away for a while.
Home Valley Station has "rustic" ablutions complete with frogs but is a good spot and you can fish in the
Pentecost River.
Both of the above are around $24 per night.
If you've got time travel the Old Karunji Road through to Diggers Rest Station and
Wyndham. Or the other way round depending on your travel direction of course.Great
views and isolated.
Have a good trip.

Stay clear of
Ellenbrae. We were up there in June and the
camping fees were dearer than at
El Questro and far more antiquated. They supplied us with a meal, only pasta with a hint of meat in it, (No choice) and then charged us $30 per meal. Everwhere else is brilliant and far better than what I expected.

Hi Everyone - Thanx for the replies. Looks as if we will
camp a couple of nights.
If you are interested here is the plan. Four of us will do the Kimberleys. The guys will leave a week before and I have drawn a striaght line from Nowra to
Darwin and we will try and follow it. We will stay elcheapo or swag it. We will meet the cooks in
Darwin after $199 flight and red eyes. We looked at flying and hiring. Hiring a 4WD was about $3600 for 23 days ( including getting the insurance down to $250 excess) and the flights would have cost about $1600 all of a sudden it was a bit expensive. See you up there. Cheers, Trev

Hi Trev,
Did you forget to say that the $135 per person includes dinner & breakfast. We are in fact $100 per room per night, yes it's expensive but that sleeps 2 people so that would work out to $50 each.
If you had dinner & breakfast it would still only be about $90 to $130 each depending upon what you ate.
It's not double what you would pay for a cabin or room & meals in most
places elsewhere yet believe me all our expenses up here are double. It costs $2.50 to $3 a kilo to fly in all fresh food, none of our fresh stuff comes by road.
We all providers on the road know it's expensive, wish we could do better for you all but everytime we turn around someone else puts their charges to us up. Our lease rent, therefore our shire rates went up 110 % in one hit this year. That's a hell of a hike to cover, yet our prices haven't altered much ( except for fuel, which we can't control) for the last 3 years. So many hidden cost like running the genny for power, never mind the fuel costs, one genny alone cost us a fortune & we must have two as a back up power supply.
Nice to see the understanding comment about the short season, that is another part of the problem, BIG
infrastructure costs but only open 6 months and only busy for 3 months.
I am not moaning, I love it here, I just feel sad we can't do it for less. Wish I had a better answer for you or a lower cost place to suggest. You will enjoy the
camping, might find it a bit hot if doing the trip Sept / Oct. This year is exceptionally dry as
well.
cheers, Anne
