I've recently moved to Adelaide From Brissy and miss the 1 day 4WD trips etc.
Can anyone recommend short off road adventures out of Adelaide? I've got a GU all set up and ready to get dirty, just no where to do it.. Had a blast on a recent trip to Flinders where we got some serious off road out and around Blinman following the old railway and a few other "barley there" tracks thanks to trusty GPS and Oziexplorer, but I'd love to try a few short range trips as well.
Cheers

Bad news is that theres not much around Adelaide for day trips.

Good news is that theres some great stuff for weekends and the deserts are only a days drive away.

I'd suggest you consider joining a 4wd club - theres about 30 of these in SA. they usually have access to properties which may not be available to the general public.
And they are pretty oranised here in SA. SAAFWDC

Secondly, consider reading the online magazine 4wheelingSA. Lots of good local articles there. This magazine also has a forum that recently started up.

Thirdly, check the archives at 4wd OO Adelaide

Cheers

Welcome to Adelaide,

There is some fun to be had on a day trip and you are never more than an hour from the city centre. I led a 4wd club trip a couple of weeks ago and I pretty sure everyone enjoyed it. There were a few water crossings but nothing too serious, some sand driving, some rocky fire tracks, some railway tracks, bit of mud, fantastic scenery, old mines, old ruins and a few rabbits, roos and lizards. As I said at no time are you more than one hour from Adelaide.

It is just a matter of being able to know where these places are and with the price of Petrol and diesel it is good to know you can get into it straight away without having to drive for hours on the blacktop. Only problem is by October it will all dry up, get dusty and the beutiful green will be dry and parched. Oh well maybe a good excuse for a gathering during the wet next year.

While it is not exactly 4wd trip (you can select 4wd to get up from blowhole creek if you want) A good look at the Flerio Pennisula can be had by following the coast down past Noarlungu Myponga dam and beach Wirrinna, Rapid Bay, Cape Jervis and onto the Deep creek conservation park where you can see Kangaroo Island and Camping is available. You then head along the Bottom of the Penninsula and check out places such as Tunk beach, Parsons beach, Newland heads and Waitpinga beach and on to Victor Harbour. By this time it will be nearly dark so you Walk accross the jetty to the island to the Penguin interprative centre where they used to run penguin spotting tours (well actually they are hard to miss) Then it is time to visit the great pubs near the forshore for a meal before heading back home.
I took my rellies from Wales on this tour and it can be done in a day - Yhey loved it

Hi Coyote, welcome to Adelaide.

I think the Border Track between Pinnaroo and Bordertown is a great short trip out of Adelaide. I've never done it in a day but it would be theoetically possible if you got going at "sparrows" and were willing to put in a real big day.

What I have done the last couple of times, however, works really well and is not very intrusive from a time point of view. We leave Adelaide after work on a Friday and head for Pinnaroo, grab a counter meal in a pub along the way (Tailem Bend or the like depending on timing) and get to Pinnaroo say about 9 or 10 'ish. We then head down the Border track and camp at the 1st camp spot called "the Pines", throwing the swags down at about 10 - 10.30 ish. It is a quite different experience doing this in the dark believe me and it probably helps to have done the trip in the daylight once before. Even the little dunes are a challenge in the dark because you don't know how much "loud pedal" to give them. The 1st time I tried this with my lad we tried twice to get over one dune and then gave up and just camped the night at the bottom. Was a piece of cake the next morning when we could see what we were doing. Reversing back down in the dark was a memorable experience. Picture my 12 yo walking behind with a torch and a hand held guiding me backwards in the dark! I can hear all those who know the track saying "but there aren't any dunes before the Pines". Believe me, in the dark they grow! (but this adds to the experience)

Anyway, in this way you pack light, leave Adelaide at say 6pm Friday, spend Saturday driving the track and you can be home again by 4 ish on Saturday. It feels like you have been away for days but in reality it's less than 24 hrs.

If you wanted to soften this a bit you could always stay Friday night in the Pinnaroo pub instead.

Just an idea, I have done it twice now and find you can cover the distance without taking days.

Trevor

Well Casnat,

If coyote were to mm me then I could give him the plot file. I just put up a general teaser there to see if he wanted more info. If you would like further info too then mm me and I will give it to you too. I did answer the question in as much as you can do some 4wd within an hour of the city and don't have to do several hours to get there.
