Last year someone posted on this site info concerning a proposed new entry fee of $50 in 2005 for a 3 day visit to Mitchell Plateau. Has anyone been there recently who can confirm that this has indeed happened this season? We are planning to go there in 2006. Much appreciate any news on this. Thanks June.

I was there in july and can confirm no entry fee and was even no fees at at Mitchell Falls campground. All you have to contend with is the 70 km of very corrigated road in to plateau.

Cheers

We were there in May, and no fees at Mitchell Camp Ground, Just make sure if you are staying ask the choppers if they are flying to the boats off shore early in the morning. If they are camp as far away from Heli Pad as poss. King Edward River Camp ground has fees and is usually packed with people. Great trip though well worth the drive, we only seen 20ks of mild rough road when we were there. GRR was a breeze, smoother than some main road around OZ and with more traffic on it.

Neither Mitchell Falls nor Edward River had fees in May/June this year.

Have a great time, the scenery is fantastic

Gues it just depends if the Calm boys come around or not, they did at King Edward for us but it was only about $6 each if I remember or 3.5ltrs of fuel :-) which is probably now 2 ltr's Mitchell is definately free camping at least till 2006, as we had a couple of nights chatting with the ranger. I agree with scenery statement David O and add even if cost $50 at mitchell it would be still worth every cent.

Hmmmmm sure they were Calm? sounds like a good way to make money certainly when I was there it didnt even look like a camping area just a stop off area before heading on or back from mitchel falls no mention of fees

Yep Davoe, they were calm boys I am sure, just a bit confused when you say it didn't look like a camp area? Had a sign up with Camping area 1 and 2, and it has a toilet area in one of the campsite's. They are with 50mtrs of each other, and are about 1.5k's past the crossing at K/Edward, there are numurous camp sits in these area's. Jeeeze hop we went to Mitchell Falls and weren't lost.. :-)

The campsites are basic, just a cleared area or six in the grass and a toilet here and there- PERFECT for me. I wish they would leave all of the campsites undeveloped. I hate the million-poles-in the ground-can't-park-within-coo-ee-of-your-tent concept that the NT parks seem to think is the way to go.

You are spot on David O,

The sites are a lot better there than the NT and SA National Park fenced in pens, I am about to do a post on our latest visit to Chambers Pillar N.T. Should have it posted in next week or so. Am just waiting to see if I hear back from NT National Parks.

Blaze, I would be very interested in a discriptin of the supposed CALM people who charged you to camp at the KE crossing. So far there is not and has never been a charge to camp there so someone ripped you off. CALM management wuld be most interested to know this, we know it's happened a few times but no one has good details, when , who , what they said etc.
Please contact me with details, email address on our site.

All this free & uncontrolled camping is all very well but as normal the few will spoil it for the many.
On the 12 Aug some idiot at the KE camp left a log not put out from their camp fire.
It is now the 20 th Sept and it's still burning and it's killed about 3 MILLION acres of country including most of Drysdale and it's still going.
The poor blasted cows will die of starvation, the country will have a hard time coming back after such a late hot burn and all because one idiot group was careless.
I get so annoyed, I might make this a main post so more see it.
cheers, Anne

No there are presently no fees at all for the Mitchell Plateau area. The proposed $50 fees I wrote about in the past couldn't happen.

They will come soon in some form though from CALM instead, it is a National Park and it is only a matter of time be it 06 or 07 season I personally can't see it being any longer than that.

CALM do provide toilets up there and keep it all clean and have been doing so for years now for no charge, so it's been been a pretty good free run for everyone.
cheers, Anne

Ann, many thanks for your reply and thanks everyone else for your replies and info. We're always glad to pay the National Parks where fees are due; just wanted to know how much cash we should have on us. I am extremely sad and sorry to hear about the fire and damage done to the station and cattle. All the best, June.
