The other post for a cruise control prompts my post

I am in Parramatta , Sydney , and would like to put a cruise control on my 1985 automatic land cruiser

I have read about the one you can buy from Kmart , but am nervous about putting in on myself . Is it easy to install yourself , considering limited mechanical ability

Does anyone install them

Is the somewhere you can buy another unit and have it installed

G'day Rod,

The AP series available from Kmart, Supercheap etc. are good units. I had one AP60 on my old Rocky and I have another, also an AP60 on my Triton. I think the AP50 is the one that looks like another small indicator stalk. I fitted both of mine, although not to an automatic. I found them relatively easy to install, with pretty clear instructions incl diagrams. Neither of mine has let me down and I reckon with enough time(i.e. don't rush the job), just about anyone could fit one. The hardest part of the fitting was mounting the sensor near the tailshaft, both vehicles required me to fabricate a bracket for the sensor as there were no mounting points near enough to the magnets to use the supplied bracket. Just used 1" light flat bar, throw in a couple of bends, drill a couple of holes and all worked out fine.

Can't comment on other units or getting them fitted, hope this helps.

I have an AP60 on my 80 series Landcruiser, which I fitted myself, and I've fitted several similar units to other vehicles in the family. It's all pretty straighforward except for mounting the sensor near the tailshaft (which you can avoid if you have electronic speed sensing, not on a 1985 LC unfortunately). If you are at all handy you should be able to make up a bracket OK. If you muck it up, it won't do any harm - it just won't work until you un-muck it up, so to speak. The instructions are pretty easy to follow.
Good luck
John

I fitted an AP50 (has a small dash-mounted keypad, not on the stalk) myself to a GQ Patrol. The instructions were pretty good and while I'm OK mechanically I'm not that good on the electrical side of things.I found the main hassles were making brackets to fit the actuator and the speed sensor and attaching the cable to the accelerator.-Steve
