Ugly pills???

Thought I'd add a little controversy to this week posts...

Have Toyota been O-D-ing on the ugly pills lately? Does anyone else think the new Hilux is the ugliest lump of metal to disgrace our roads recently? Is it trying to out-macho the Ford F250 or something, with those great slab sides and tiny windows?

I thought the current Prado (120?) was pretty bad, but the Hilux takes the cake.

Whatever happened to classic, no-nonsense, practical styling like, say, the Land Rover Defender?...

[Go on, do it - I know you can't resist!]

I also think that it is ugly too - especially the size of the wheels - they look out of proportion to the rest of the vehicle. I also think the Defender is ugly too!!! - nothing beats the 80 Series for looks.

Hi Karl,

I remember when the 80series was released and many thought it was ugly compared to the 60series. But like you, most think the 80series is now good looking compared to the newer vehicles.

I guess its what we're used to.

Cheers

I just stood there shaking my head when I first saw the new hilux at the airport. There's no way I'd have one of those parked in my driveway. Seems to be a fashion statement rather than a practical workhorse.

Ian,

I'm not going to disagree at all, I totally agree. I do however disagree with the "sexy beast" status you are trying to give to the (in my opinion) bland rover Defender. I do however have a real thing for the looks of the grand rover Discovery, if only you could trust the build quality I would have tried one of these in my garage years ago.

Cheers mate great topic for debate.
Trevor.

A tourist in one of the gorges in the Bungle Bungles said to my wife, "Your vehicle looks like a real 4 wheeldriver".

And the vehicle was our Defender 110 with a few extras on it!
It maybe ugly and old fashioned to some, but it does the job well and has been very reliable in the nearly 3 years we've owned it.

The cook loves it as well, but that means nothing, she's obviously got bad taste 'cos she married me!

I'd rate the looks of the new HiLux right down there with the new Discovery.
They're both uglier than a hat full of monkey's iceholes.

Yhere is a black one I have seen a few times in Wetherill Park (Western Sydney). Black, All decked up with factory polished bull bar, polished sports bar with a row of 4 lights mounted above the cab, & wait for it-----

LOW PROFILE rubber. just the thing for off road.

looks great but would go No where.

I like that OldMagpie, "rustic charm with a touch of macho", very good.

Depending on my mood mine is refered to as "pugly" - pretty ugly,"bugly" - bloody ugly or "fugly" and you can probably guess that one.

I must agree about some of the stuff around these days as the new Discos are horrible from the back.
What about those Rexonas or whatever they're called ......... yuk!
Still as they say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and each to his own because it'd be a dull place if we all liked the same thing.

Hi
Use to have a SR5 duel cab (1999 model) thought they were a top looking 4wd, would cry if I had to trade it in a the new model. Just tooooo ugly.
Father in law had a 2 year old disco. When he saw photos of the new disco he couldn't get down to the dealer quick enough to get one of the last of the previous models. New model too heavy and to get the same spec over 10K extra.

I saw one driving down the road today.

Big ugly wheel archs with more lumps than Diana Dors (sure, I'm showing my age), skinny little wheels looking like crayon trying to fill a crater. A bonnet with slopes like a mud slide.

It's fugly. Looks like a fat ugly woman with matchstick legs. Gone are the beefy masculine lines that really appeal to us blokes.

I thought Yota got it wrong with the 100 series sticking a big truck on skinny "el cheapo" steel rims. But this is ridiculous. Just how long do they think they can keep selling stuff on their name. The populous does like a bit of visual appeal.

There's a line from an old Blues song "make an ugly woman your wife, yo' be happy the rest of yo' life".

Mr Yota, your wife is sure ugly.

Well I have the 120 Prado and when I first got it I copped a fair bit of stick for it's looks, particularly the front end. I think Truckster described it as having a face only a mother could love! Thanks mate!

After having it a year or so I am now quite attached to it but it does still look pretty different to most other stuff on the market.

The new Hilux has a similar front on it and I have seen a couple with that factory Bullbar on. Now THAT is ugly! I don't like that swept up rear end under the tray either. And agree about the tiny looking wheels.

Oh well, seems that are all going edgy styling and plastic these days so GET USED TO IT FELLA'S!!!!

Cheers
Muddy
