I just got a quote from a local Toyota dealer for the following basic items to do a routine filter and oil change on my TD 4.2 Troopy. (Doing the job myself this time)
Just interested in what the
forum thinks of the pricing and what others pay for similar bits for there respective Nissan, Mitsubishi etc.
Air Cleaner Element $55.00
Fuel Filter $26.95
Fuel filter $44.00
Oil Filter $41.25
All prices include GST.
The Troopy also has duel fuel filters, hence the quote is for 2 units.
Cheers

for my 2H there are 2 types of air filters avaialble from Toyota, one is resuable (washable) the other is single use. The washable one is around the $50 mark. Check which one they quoted you. It may be that you are getting the resuable filter at an OK price.

It already has the washable one and I have washed it quite a few times, figured it was time to actually replace it, hence the quote.
Toyota ones (For this model) are all supposed to be washable.

Davoe was just passing and thought I would stop of and ask what "Toyota original parts" were going to sting me.
Had every intention of asking on here to see if the masses were all going aftermarket stuff and where they were going for the stuff.
Cheers Mate.

$41.25 for a oil filter sounds a bit rich or is there something special about them?
I pay $9.00 for the genuine ford oil filter. But at the same time the ford air cleaner is $78 (Why I now use a K&N air filter), the Fuel filter is $60 every 50,000k’s.

I'm with you Harry. I bought just bought about 2 years + worth of filters for my 1HZ from the local Gough & Gilmour (CAT Dealer). They are genuine Donaldson filters. Oil Filters $24, Water/Fuel Filter $29, Primary paper fuel filter $9 and Air filter (2 different qualities, best one $38). This particular air filter the CAT bloke said don't change it until the air filter light comes on - thats how good they are. I wouldn't go that far but it should last a good 40K. For the measly $9 I'll change the primary fuel filter every 2500km and the others at 5k.
Stay away from the Auto shops if you want good prices.
Cheers,
Hughesy

The Toyota oil filter is a double filter and i used to buy them , but I change often at 10k so i use the Donaldson one's now. We get our filters in numbers and we have a mate that works for this distrubutor so let Bill or I know if you want same.
Catch u morrow

Bill & I did our wheel bearings on a wet day not so long ago, so if you need to know the tricky bits ,we found out about them too. No real dramas, just takes all day, that is for the 4 wheels though. Just need a set of seals about $100, some proper grease a 14 & 17 mm spanner with a socket set. Eezy peezy and peace of mind that they are done.

John,
If my math is correct it adds up to $167.20. These days that will not fill a fuel
tank.
I went through the aftermarket filters and now will only use genuine. The air filter can be washed and reused, I wash
mine 5 times before it gets pensioned off. Fuel filter should last about 20,000k and the oil filter 5000k.
That works out to be $70 every 5000k for filters if the oil filter is change, the air filter washed and 1/4 of the fuel filter was used.
Aftermarket might be cheaper but I think if the vehicle is a long term investment I think that the real thing is worth it.

John
As I'm sore you know
most company's make money by buying something then marking it up to make some.....
I buy Toyota Filters as I am of the belief that if they are good enough for them there good enough for me..
The problem with the cheaper filters is most time you get what you pay for..
With out proper testing the same is not always the same
just look at it this way cost of filter, same as cost of carton of BEER would you buy cheaper BEER????????

Richard

Richard I don't have any issue with your argument except for the one about mark up, when one Toyota dealer offers me an oil filter for $41 and I get a price for the same original filter for $15 less then I am concerned that I am being ripped off.
And yeah I know its only a few bucks and it won't make or break me but I guess its a little bit of principle involved and yep that principle may be misguided also.
Recovered from your trip yet?
I may be over your way around Christmas maybe catch up for a drink.
Cheers mate

Yes were
home from the trip had some problems with the CT at
well 33 (down the Kinson) had some welding repairs and returned west.
Had a look around the NW of WA instead it turned out to be a good trip until we headed down into the Gascoyne and it started to rain, they closed the roads around us and we spent two nights at
Lyons River HS till they opened them. The Troopy handled it OK
You are welcome to call anytime when you get over here, just send us a mesage..,.,,
As for pricing I checked my old invoices and prices are OK the mark up on cost will be around 2 to 3 times this will allow a discount to the local Mech to make some money as
well....
If you can get them at that price GO for it<<<
Regards
Richard

Hey
John i draged this of another
forum this guy seems happy with them considering where he lives.
Hi,
The guys at
Sydney Filter Service were pretty good to deal with when I ordered some filters for the Jack, rang them they knew which ones and sent them the next day.
$48 for 2 sets of oil filters and one fuel filter. the oils have non-returns in them and even have the Isuzu part# on the box, makes me wonder if they are the OEM's in a different box.
I have paid close to this for one set of oil filters from local suppliers and they were not the same quality.
Delivery was $15 but this is fair to Tas, Aust post rates.
I will definately be going back to them.

What's the name of the LR spares place as those prices are significantly better than the dealers.

I take my air filter to a guy that cleans and tests them that way I know there are no small tears etc in them. Cost is $7 for a GU nissan filter. Took a mates Hilux filter to him only had 5000klm use and looked perfect. Failed the
test, separated between the glue and top frame, couldn't see it but leaked during the
test. The guy said he gets quite a few through the doors that fail and you wouldn't even know by just looking at them.
Well worth the $7, to clean,
test and bag them up.

I only use Genuine filters, and get them with a club discount.
Bought oil filters in bulk for $30 each;
Fuel prefilter was about $17 and main fuel filters $35.
Spare reusable air filter about $45.
If you want cheaper aftermarket stuff, the Don Kyatt outlets sell Sakura brand filters which look to be good quality (how else would you know?), and come from a factory that makes genuine Toyota filters.
I'm happy to pay the extra cost of genuine at the above prices.
Used to be a place on Ebay selling a box of 10 genuine oil filters for $275 incl postage.
Cheers
