Typical in 9 mins with 28 views to this thread Yahoo has decided that there has been to much traffic and shutdown the photos. I would have added them to the forum if someone would send them to me.....

Didnt look to bad as far as fires go unless I missed something the trees seemed to have survived, Burned out ares i have seen are totally burnt including bog holes whetre tree stumps are burnt out and take about 20 years to even begin looking like recovering. After burning they get smothered in regrowth about 5 trees per meter that neither man nor beast can fight their way through easily and take many years to thin to areas that are useable if they dont reburn

You are right Daveoe, they do come worse, it is the total area burnt that is the greatest shame.
A pity the cattle can't eat the remaining tree tops. The burning now is bad for the country but it doesn't help the cattle a lot either. Did you also notice how much grass was remining for them to eat ?
We can't exactly run round a million acres and feed out hay. Never mind the fact that even if possible it would cost more than the cattle are worth.
My feelings about it of course come from what it does to the stock as well as to the land.
cheers, Anne

Hi Laurie,

What a terrible shame, we were in the Kimberleys during July and August. This is really a tragedy. The countryside where the fire has devestated was truely spectacular. What a pitty some careless person can cause so much damage.

You just wish you could catch some people and make them responsible for what they have done. This will take years for the country and the people in the Kimberleys to recover from.

It is also a pitty the national tv programs havent picked up the story to make people more aware of how easy it is, when someone is careless, that they can cause this much damage to the countryside, peoples lives and livelihoods and also tourism.

Unfortunately if the media picked it up I fear it would just be turned into another anti-4wd bash and another reason to get rid of us.

One reason I haven't pushed it to the media is the fact they go nuts and can say a lot of silly things that are incorrect.
Years back we got burnt and they did pick up on it about 6 weeks after the event when they were scratching for news.
We had stoped it before it got to the actual homestead, we had had early storms & there was new green pick for the cattle. I told them it wasn't so bad and due to the fast rain after it things were going ok now.
I also said, I have been caught before, please don't print any rubbish.

The headline.
Stricken pastoralist watches blaze approach.

I have been caught many times now with what I say being NOTHING like what is printed.
A headline like above makes you look a right fool to the other locals who know the facts.
cheers, Anne
