Information would be appreciated this way, re current conditions for travel in Finke Gorge, NT. Looking to travel UP the gorge soon, from Ernie's road, to Hermannsberg. Three fourbies (80 series Toj, Jackaroo, and a Navarra) with stock clearance and a collection of recovery toys - a stock Subaru Forester will give it a sniff too. If awkward for the Forester, they will go the long way round (and see some alternative interesting places possibly !). Thanks in advance for any useful feedback.

I cant help with up to date info
we passed through the area 3 weeks ago and it looked farely dry but didnt do this run
We did this run 3 years ago from North to South and found the soft river bed sand at the Top End to be fairly hard going for my Pajero but didnt stop it- low ratio around 3rd gear to be safe and pressures down to 20 psi. river crossing was low and just had to watch rocks with clearance- pick your way over.
We did get lost on wrong turn near the old cattle yards on South End so you will need to keep up with KMs travelled and watch your Map for the turns.
The one that may be hard is the turn of the graded track into the start of the 4 wd stuff at the Southern End as you head towards the Mission.
I afraid 3 years has passed and the track could even be better sign posted now
Boggy Hole is a nice place for Lunch and that just where you cross the River.
We drove from Palm Valley to King Canyon this way. I suggest staying together as the Smaller Car may need a snatch through the Sand at the Top End.
Happy Travelling

Hi Banjo
We travelled that way 2 months ago. You should have no problems, the Forester will become friendly with one of the recovery vehicles when the sand get deep. The track is not well marked and many will tell you not to do it, but we had no problems with the GU Ute and a slideon

A contact I have in the Alice says that the signposting into the lower end from the "Ernie" road has been upgraded recently by parks people.
