Guys I know tyres have been done to death and there are way to many past Posts to wade through, so call me lazy.
Did the ring around this morning for tyre prices. Looking for AT 255/70/16's
Prices ranged from $300 for BFG's being the dearest and most widely recommended by the retailers, strange that but cheepest price I got for these was $265.
also got prices for: Bridgestone Desert Duellers ($260), Maxis ($185), Hankook RH03 ($170), Eldorado ($190), & Coppers ATR & ST's ($242). So as you can see a wide range of prices.
BFG & Coopers have been to Death so have Duellers and from what I can gather It's abit like Ford/Holden, Cruiser/Nissen & Eagles/Swans. All personal choice.
What about though the Maxis, Eldorado's & the Hankook's???
Any advice please. Including good and bad points, road noise, durability etc.
I'm not impressed by brand names I want value for money.
Vehicle is a Terracan, used off road as much as possible, will be doing the
Kimberley and NT Autumn Winter next year.
Thanks
Dunc.

Dunc,
I agree with Bob. Go for the BFGs and you won't be disappointed. 80,000+ on my current set from new.

Never heard of that make of tyre don't even know if they're available in the West. Snag is I'm in
Perth so the airfare to NZ would make them damned expensive to come and collect plus the exces baggage would be a bugger. Last time I bought 6 of anything in NZ was six bottles of Pinot and got slugged $20 odd dollars WET tax per bottle.
Cheers

GT Radials (as advertised by Moffat) are available in eastern Oz.
Seem a reasonable tyre at a reasonable price, i.e. under $200.00.
Trying to choose between GT radial and Eldorados for my next tyres.
The Simex Roadtrekkers I have are too road orientated for offroad so planning on 2 sets of rims.

Maxis are good value too.........I dont know what their A/T's are like but their Bravo Radials are great on sand, dirt and the black top........very quiet and good grip on wet bitumen.
Have done about 30000 and still have 60% tread

Dunc,
I have BFG A/T's on the Cruiser.
I had BFG A/T's on my V6 Triton D/C; did lots of
Pilbara driving when in
Karratha for work. I had no problems with flats on both vehicles. Some nasty rocks up there too.
Driving Style and maintaining correct pressures, alignment, etc will also dictate mileage.
I get about 60000km from a set. They're very good all-rounders.
I am thinking about trying a different set of Bridgestones, Goodyear, Cooper, or Dunlop, but haven't done any research yet.
I'll more than likely just get another set of BFG's and be done with it. I can be old fashioned like that.
It's a 4WD, not a WRX, Strength, grip and durability are important (also look at the load ratings for each; VERY important)
At the end of the day, you and your family's life is riding on four square contact patches of rubber on road. If you've experienced a blowout at 110km/h through tyre fatigue, a couple extra hundred is a small price to pay IMHO.
Cheers,
Davo

Thanks so far guys for all your comments. I wish I could afford to just try something different to see how they go, I'm not a market researcher so what I buy can not be a pig in a poke, so to speak, when I'm spending close on $1800 I want to be sure, as close as is humanly possible, that what I've bought is worthwhile.
From all the comments so far and based on market availability, it suggests that the BFG's would be the way to go. There are too many choices and to try them all I'd have to have won Lotto and be the only winner and have about a dozen equivalent vehicles all driven by clones of me to determine exactly which is in fact the best all round tyre, for my vehicle, for my driving style, conditions, etc.
Thanks again one and all.

Dunc,
I think somebody gave you the wrong price for
the Desert Duellers.
Desert Duellers are superceded tyres and were selling for $168 each.
The Dueller 694 (doughnut technology) were recently available from Bridgestone for $218 each.
I have the 694's on the Jack and
the Desert Duellers on the camper.
Both are a good choice of an AT tyre for the price that you (should) pay.
I suggest you check the prices with a Bridgestone Dealer and remember there are two different types.

Thanks Sand Man, you could be right. Most probably automatically assumed when I heard Duellers that he was referring to Desert Duellers.
Yep ,your right just checked my quotes and I did get the price for the 694's just assumed that they were Deserts. Moral there is don't assume, because we know why don't we?
