Brian,

Best idea is to check with Parks or watch the 4WDVic website. It is likely that some tracks may not be open as there has been a lot of trees brought down by wind storms. My last info was that there was a massive amountof clearing to be done.

Vic High country tracks (most) open on the 27th of october, Davies Plain never opens until early december, I think the date this year is the 5th of december.

Brian - forget Tom Groggin/Davies Plain for the moment. I believe that it won't be opened for at least another month AFTER the rest are opened up. They are trying to let it recover still.

Our club is heading off on a 5-day trip there from the 1st through to the 5th. The main itinerary is the Snowy River National Park on the Eastern side of the High Country . Track closures at this time of year will determine the alternative routes back up the Kosciusko National Park then on to the Goobragandra River campsite near Tumut .

NPWS - Jindabyne - has informed us today - that the tracks we need to transverse our journey
are all open and some others we would like to try are scheduled to be open by Sat. 1st Oct .

Give them a call first.....

Hi ! Brian ,
The main 'Off Road' tracks in the High Country are subject to seasonal closures .
I would advise you to check with the NPWS at Jindabyne - and the Victorian Parks
orginisations to get some feedback of which tracks will be open at the time of your journey .
We are travelling to the High Country this October - as we do every year on the October Long Weekend .
If you are a 'new adventurer' into this wonderful part of Australia - I would suggest that you organise a trip with someone else that knows the area - and the weather conditions - that can change dramaticley at this time of year - and also change the degree of difficulty on each and every track in the region .
Hope this helps ,

Brian - go to http://www.kosciuskohuts.org.au/

We actually have one on our place. The KHA is a great organisation. Some people dismiss the value of the huts and say that they are irrelevant. I totally disagree. Ours was built around 1850 by Chinese miners (most likely) who were building a great wall diving two major Cooma-Monaro "runs". They used this little hut for shelter during the building process, which would have taken months. We've called it "Narelle's Hut" - after our next door neighbour who discovered it on our place recently after she went chasing a horse coat that one of her horses lost. It's a great little piece of history. We love getting involved too, and would definitely volunteer to help rebuild some other huts up there that need repair.

Brian ,
There are two main organisations that care for and restore the
High Country Huts .
One is the 'KHA' and the other is 'Vic. Huts Assoc.'
It depends on which side of the border you reside as to which organisation would best suit your needs .
Or - you could join both organisations - if the entire High Country Region and the Huts are your main reason for visiting the area in general .
The High Country 4x4 Club is based in Sydney - so we are individual members of the KHA - this is just a time / travel / distance decision for our club for volunteer work on the huts that are closer to our main members residential situation - so you would have to decide for yourself in joining either or both groups .
They do a fantastic job in regards to restoration and with negotiations between all that are involved with the huts in the area - and in particular - the negotiations with the NPWS for access and funding issues .
However - This is a 'long term' approach to more information of the area - and neither of these organisations actually lead 4wd vehicles through the region - and in fact - rely heavily on experienced 4wd clubs and drivers for support in transferring materials to the huts for their restoration projects .
You should consider joining a local 4wd club that knows the High Country region - and who is willing to take a novice 4wdriver on a club trip to the area .
Hope this helps ,
Kind regards ,
Disco Td5 .
