Howdy all,
We got back home on Sat arvo after 8 weeks on the road through some great country. We travelled west across the Anne Beadell to
Neale Junction then down to the
Neale Breakaways, (Keep it a secret as its fairly unknown and very nice scenery). Back tracked up to Willuna then onto the
Heather Highway to pick up the Gunbarell. Parts' of both are very corrugated and some days we only travelled about a 100 k's but was great to be out there. On to Mt Augustus via Meekathara where the vodka cruisers are no longer poofter drinks but Matty Lloyds (true). Mt Augustus is better than Ayres Rock(Yes I'm a typical 4WD driver, overweight, homophobic, not kind to the unemployed etc etc except that I live in the bush). On to
Tom Price the back way then Karajini, Wittenoon Gorge which is lovely except its about to be closed due to asbestos, then to the coast at Karatha then down the coast to
Perth and home.
Diesel was not as expensive as I thought it might be, dearest was $1.79 although at the Coles discount outlet in Karatha I managed to put in 48 litres in a 45 litre
tank that probably wsn't bone dry. No wonder they offer 4cents discount. They weren't the only place like that but it was usually the discount outlets where I think the pumps aren't accurate.
We did 11,500k's and total fuel cost was just under $2,000.
Feeling depressed now I'm home and a bit weary too, so that will do for now.
Cheers
Des

FANTASTIC good to see another croweater crossing the padock to where the grass is greener!! surprised you went home. Seriosly I am planning a trip through the gascoyne making Mt Augustus the highlight early next year - How did you find it (figurativly speaking - I can read a roadmap) and any suggestions?. I will also be taking week trips to
Neale junction and
plumridge lakes so any info there woujld be appreciated

Davoe,
Mt Augustus was really good although the areas south were fairly dry.
The road from Mt Augustus north to Parabadoo was very pretty in
places. We
camp from
Meekatharra and the roads were pretty reasonable.
At
Neale Junction, head south 50k's to
the Breakaways and drive in and have a good look around. Can't help with Plumridge though except thats a 40 k trip each way.

Sounds like a great trek Des.
My wife and I are planning to go through some of those areas one day.
Looks like we'll have to cross Wittenoon Gorge off the itinerary. I was really looking forward to seeing that too.
It cost you $1 for every 5.75 kms. Des. What is your rig? I'm interested to compare what sort of mileage I'd get with gas. Is there much LPG available in the north west?
There is a fix for your depression you know............another trek
All the best

My bus is a normally aspirated 100 series Diesel with a roof top Shipp shape camper so it catches a bit of air when you do over 90k's affecting the economy.
Pity about Wittenoon as the walk up the
creek is very pretty and the
waterhole is beautiful. Pity about all the blue stuff laying about.
Next trek will have to wait until more holidays are available. bummer

Welcome home,
I know that depression, I"m still depressed, and it's true the best way to get over it, is to get out there again.
Looking forward to catching up

well and the ears aren't burning lol
Can't say much for one of the opposition cars though with the tray to chassis supports crushing and needing rewelding while still out in the middle of no where.

Hi and welcome
home!
Sounds like you had a great time, looking forward to hearing more indepth stories and seeing some photos one day!
I can empathize with the feeling depressed bit....10 weeks since our return and I still have not settled back into "citylife". I think I must be "irrevocably changed", no longer the 5 star type...nothing less than million will do me now!! (dont tell Andrew that though..his wallet has been hoping for this change for 15 years!!).
Have fun unpacking and getting all the red dust out of everything.
Take care
Jen

Only had one real fright on the whole trip, Elaine walked into a Pearl
Shop at the Hillary's Marina. Scary stuff that

G'day - sounds like you had a great trip - we have been back from our 3 month trek for about 4 weeks - and have put the house on the market - can't take the
grey Melbourne weather any more, and we are also depressed. Anyway - re Wittenoom - a lady who lives in the town and is at the gem
shop reckons that
the gorge may be taken up by Karrijini - don't know how accurate this is - but that what she was telling people.
Karrijini is fantastic - and I loved
Tom Price itself, the
mine tour is the best around we felt.
Look forward to your next trip.

Thanks Julie, We only heard about Wittenoon the other day. You used to be able to drive from Wittenoon through Weano into Karajini but they have stopped that now. Might only be a matter of tome before the Gorges are closed off too.

All this gushy mushy stuff about great to hear you back!! I thought you were a new person on the site and was going to say welcome but Jen reminded me that you are the guy from the Riverland!!
It took me for weeks to get over my post holiday depression. I have pictures of our trip that come up on my screen saver and I relive the time away. Not sure what the next trip will be. Pity you didn't make it to sunny
Melbourne!
