I know this has been asked before (I would have thought) but what is a good general purpose brand and model around the $350-$400 mark plus antena?
And where to fit it in a 99 105 series.

As you will be aware, you don’t have a lot of room in the 105 to mount any extra gear. I have a GME 3400 ($429.00) with a remote head. I have mounted the main unit on top of the existing radio using heavy duty Velcro. For the remove head, I removed the plastic cover from the ash tray, drilled a hole in the ash tray and mounted the head to the ash tray. If I want to remove the radio I re-install the plastic cover and you won’t even notice that a radio had been installed. This works for me. I have matched the radio with a GME 4705 4.5db ($169.00) antenna. This works great too. Let me know if you want any pics.

Thanks for info. I will prob go for the GME 4400 as I require the large display. I already have a roof console ( Dept Of Interior) with a GME AM unit in place but have room for another din size unit to fit on the side.
Pics would be great if you don't mind.
Thanks

You need to work out what you want in a radio before the brand. I suspect all the top brands are pretty good.
I wanted a built in speaker, large LCD display and user programmable additional channels (but haven't used them yet), so I went for the GME 4400. It is a full DIN sized unit, so you have to have somewhere to put it. I built a roof console for it and ran a remote mike cable down and out in the dash so I don't have the curly cord dangling from the roof.
If space is a problem, the remote head units are good.

Norm that is the capital Q for QUALITY unit that I have installed just recently replacing a 3200. The features go beyond the 3400 and the larger digits of the display are a lot easier on the eyes.
You can see them all at Prestige
Communicationsand even download the manuals. I have been amazed that radios can arrive on my doorstep the next day, the opposite side of the continent! Very professional outfit.

I have a Uniden Sundowner, no probs. You can pick it up for the $300 mark. Then a good electrophone atenna 4.5dB for about the $120 mark.

I have the ICOM IC400 and it is an excellent unit, very robust and more features than I could ever use. Certainly reccomend them.

Just another point to consider - adjustable squelch. The Electrophone TX3200 & 3400 have a squelch switch only - either on or off, which means that you are not able to filter out those annoying broken conversation noises that come in from afar. With adjustable squelch you can increase the threshold level and limit your received signal to your nearby friends as required.
I believe the inclusion of a squelch rotary knob is mandatory for your sanity.
