I was so bleep off with the fluctuating price of petrol this week that I searched for alternatives.
(BP’s cheaper price was on Wednesday this week and I missed out)

So I ended up changing to the new “Bio Unleaded” fuel marketed by SAFF outlets to give it a try. Apparently SAFF released the "Bio Unleaded" brew about 6 weeks ago. This is a 10% blend of ethanol with unleaded petrol giving an octane rating of 95RON. According to the brochure I received it includes Bi-Tron gasoline conditioner and is suitable for use in all vehicles that normally run on standard unleaded fuel.

Now three petrol stations in my area were all selling unleaded today for $1.31.7. The difference with the Bio Unleaded is that for the same price, you are getting “premium” grade unleaded which sells for 8 cents/litre more elsewhere.

I have previously trialled Shell premium unleaded (also 95RON) and although noticing a slight gain in performance did not notice a gain in economy worth the extra 8 cents/litre.

So I should achieve at a minimum, a similar performance gain due to the higher octane rating than standard unleaded and with the price being no dearer, one could say I have already achieved a gain in economy.

It will be interesting to see if I notice a real gain in l/100k.

When you add the ‘Premium Performance’ with ‘Cleaner Burning’ with ‘Better Efficiency’ with ‘Less Greenhouse Gas Emission’ with “Helping the Farmers”, I just have to qualify as an honorary Greenie don’t I?

Anyway, I am going to give the ethanol blended fuel a try for a few months and if nothing else, at least I will be supporting an Australian owned Company.

Gee, I feel better already:-)

Hi Bill, I will be interested in your findings. I posted about E10 the other day and caused a hell of a sheep fight.

With all the hysteria over (I think there are a couple of undeclared anti-ethanol propagandists on this forum) the safety or otherwise of E10, I think I'll go and have a bottle of E14.5 with my dinner tonight. (my favourite Shiraz is 14.5% ethanol!) And that's supporting an Australian owned company too.
Can't help feeling that if I can run on E12 to E15, with the occasional dash of E50 on special occasions, for much longer than the average car is around, then it can't be too dangerous.

It maybe premium grade but its mixed with other crap(ethaol) which wouldnt be anything like Premium anymore.

No, just sucked in by the marketing hype! :)~

Sand Man,

We were told up here not to use anything other than standard unleaded in our 01 Jack. Don't know the exact reasoning behind it but I thought it had something to do with burning the plugs ?? (they are platinum so I don't know why). This suggestion by our usual service mechanic and a holden dealer in North NSW.

Regards Trevor.
