We came across this gem on the road from Willis back to
Jindabyne the other day. I did see a brand name on the back but failed to write it down. Looks like a great old van. It's seen better days - and the
suspension really could have been stronger... but all that aside - I think I want one! I just love the shape. The dark areas up top are windows - the bottoms areas are just painted blanks. It looked like the top lifted up into a pop-top extension. Entry is through a cantilevered ramp at the back which folds down.
Does anyone know who made this van and what it is called?

It looks life a "Murrumba Star" caravan from the late 60s built in caboolture in QLD. I was only a kid at the time but they were made from fibreglass and were very light. You could also buy the same thing without the
wheels and put into a ute.
From memory they had smaller wheeels though, but hey is was nealry 40 years ago.
The company went belly up after only year or 2 but like you I would love one as
well.
Cheers

Thanks Mark!
You've jogged my memory now and "Murrumba Star" IS what it said on the tailgate. I WANT one!
Cheers!

THAT was designed in the 60's? Fawk, that would have been based on something from the thunderboids! Does look interesting, never seen one before

Lots of weird stuff comes from Qld Bruce but that's another story. Gotta be light with that pretzel stick chassis.

Can anyone say "Battle Star Galactica"...
Perhaps someone bought the moulds and making limited batches, that thing looks way too tidy for a 40 year old van, although you do say it had seen better days, the pics obviously do it a lot of justice.

Looks really cool Chrispy, but do you REALLY want to deal with 40year old fibreglass????

That's absolutely true Andrew.... fibreglass that has cracked or has exposed edges deteriorates rapidly by injesting
water along the fibres through a capilliary action. It's generally stuffed in most
places by now (40 years). This one looked OK from what I could see - the "operative" work being "see".
Anyhow - I'd just like one to stick on the other side of our property from the van we have now - a 1960
Franklin. I know which looks far funkier though.... :) I don't think you'd drag one all over Australia - It'd be too fragile now (although the one I was has been a looooong way over the past few months.) I'd love to clean one up, take moulds and re-constitute everything that may have rotted. The windows and frames are fine. The interior would probably need to br replaced.

If it has been correctly wetted out, there is absolutely nothing wrong with 40yo fibreglass.

True again Shaker...... as long as it has.
To tell you the truth - this van looked like it was in pretty good nick.

I think an outboard on the back would turn it into a really cool machine.

You've brought back memories there.
"When I was a lad" my parents took us touring with our caravan. There'd be at least a couple of them in every caravan
park we went into.
