Hi All ,

I did 14,000 across from Sydney all through Pilbara and back in Julu / Aug . I used that roll on paint protection system and it worked very well in protecting the sides of my Cruiser from scratches .

A lot of the time we were pushing through scrub ( no tracks ) and those holly grevillea etc really scratch the crap out of duco . Well they did last year , but not this time , with the roll on "stuff".

It rained a couple of times going over and the stuff turned white and went soft , but it only peeled back on some of the leading edges . It looked pretty bad by the end of the trip , but it certainly did the job .

One gent I spoke to reckoned that it looked and behaved just like the release agent that you paint onto fibreglass moulds . If that is the case ,( can any geniuses out there confirm this ? ) then we could all save ourselves some money and just buy that .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Be carefull posting stuff like that here last posts like that drew critiscism for worrying bout the vehicle getting scratched and driving off the tracks.
Sounds like you were having fun anyway and at least you were not afraid to have a go with your nice shiny new(ish) 4by
I took a different approach and bought one for fairly cheap with average duco and a couple of small dents. I will have a go at polishing out some of the scratches If I ever get time to hit the big smoke but I dont think it will be the same again

Yes Davoe , the first time I made a post asking about this stuff , I got exactly that kind of crap . But hell , if it makes them feel tough , we should let them enjoy themselves !
My car got so scratched last year in the Great Sandy Desert , I could not cut many of them out , they were just too deep .
This year , I guess we were "off the tracks" . Our GPS told us "it's around here somewhere " but we couldn't actually see it for quite a few klm .
Cheers mate ,
Willie .

Am interested in roll on paint protection, our vehicle is only 2 weeks old and I don't want to trash it as it's also the family car.

Who suppied and applied the protection and at what cost.

Would really appreciate a responce.

Cheers

You know I am such a dummy - after I put the stuff on , I chucked the can away and can't remember the name . I purchased it at Bars N Racks in Hornsby , Sydney - their phone number is 02 9477 5738 and if you ring them , they will tell you the name of the product .

It was easy , I just rolled it on with a 4" roller , waited half an hour then put on another coat .
I am a clutz and if I say it's easy , it is !

All,

(I posted this on the pajero forum but thought I would copy it here. Part of the purpose of these forum is to share information, not just critisise each other)

Tried Autoskin out recently on the Paj and thought I would provide you all with some feedback. These are just my thoughts, I have no interest in the product.

MyNP Exceed is dark blue (never again) and shows every scrape and mark. Recently had the Paj resprayed after banging it up a bit so decided to check out AutoSkin (formerly ScratchPro) and see if it would provide the extra protection for the paintwork while I was offroad.

I paid approx $140 for 4ltrs (ouch) and it came with a bucket and roller for application. It is just a small standard paint roller, pretty standard. I have used it twice and only used half the container so averaging about $35 per use.

I have used it twice. Once for a weekend trip to Brooklyn 4WD park in NSW and one for a 4 week trip to the Cape. Both trips have had tress and sticks scraping on the car, I can see the marks in the AutoSkin but only one large scratch from the cape has left a faint mark on the car. There is no sign at all of any of the faint brush marks which sort of polish out and no sign of scratching. I am very happy with the protection provided.

When applying it needs to be put on thick. Removal is just wetting it and peeling off. I have found it pretty easy but you will want a high pressure spray handy to get some of the bits off. There will also be some smaller glue like residue left around the edges but it comes off easy with polish. It is not as easy to remove as they make out but I usually spend and hour or two getting the outer layer off and then the following weekend re-wash and polish. Normally the car needs 2 washes to get everything if it is really dirty.

If AutoSkin gets wet it does go soft and will break but just dries back hard. I do not put it close to the door handles for this reason. You can tell it is on the car it leaves a Matt type finish and looks pretty ugly, lots of people look trying to work out what you have done!!. I have driven at over 100km/h when it is wet and not had any issue. I have also done deep water crossings and not had any issues. It will not protect you against scratches when wet.

Overall I will continue to use the product when I know there is a risk of getting scratched. It is probably too much hassle for an easy weekend trip or beach trip to put on unless you know you are going into some rugged country. If going into a real 4WD situation I would spend the time applying and removing rather than having the scratches and brush marks in the 4WD but @ $35 per trip it is cheaper than continually trying to polish out or getting detailed regulary.

Hope this helps!!!

Duane

It sounds very impressive. I might put on a coat when I trade my vehicle in (to hide the scratches).
Some new 4Bs look like they've been dipped in crap at the factory (no names - no pack drill), so I guess an extra coat would be superfluous.

I have also used the Auto Skin and will be happy to use it again. Went across the Anne Beadell and Connie Sue etc where the tracks are overgrown. You can buy a 1 litre bottle for about $50.00 but for a large 4x you should use 2 bottles. The thicker its applied the better. The product lasted the 8 weeks we were away except where some people can't resist picking at it. It is harder to remove from the rubber seals and perspex lights than the paintwork but perseverance pays.

I have a Roof Top tent with the ladder fixed by two brackets to the framework. The front bracket broke due to the rough roads (metal fatigue) and the ladder swung down the side of the car while doing about 60k's p/h and when the ladder hit the car, I finnished up with a deep scratch about 1.5cms long despite the ladder swinging its way right down the side of the car removing some of the skin. It sure saved me some money.

G'day all..
I have used autoskin on my new lc100 and am also very happy with it. As long as it does not get wet it is wonderful. A good thick coating works best. From what I,ve heard from others, it is best to avoid high speeds in the wet as it can peel off in the wind.
Cheers
