A truly great stop is the Eulo Pub, about 70km past Cunnamulla. Take the detour down through Currawinya Nat Park. There are freshwater and saline lakes. The Bilby enclosure is also in the Park. There is a bit of a bush track that will take you through the Park and on to Thargomindah, but I would suggest you check with the locals on that one, or maybe, with the Park Rangers.

The road from Currawinya to Thargo that appears on most maps is actually closed and is private property. It is still passable in the dry however it is not maintained and there are a number of washouts. If you get stuck the telstra cdma mobile phone reception here is quite good. The property owners might not be too happy though.

You are now supposed to go through Hungerford, along the border and then head north to Thargo. Speaking of Hungerford the pub there is quite interesting also. Amenities are not flash but the publican and his missus (or should I say the publican and her fella) are very interesting.

It is bitument out to Nocatundra Pub and last time I travelled it the dirt beyond there wasn't too bad. Buses use this route to get out Innaminka.

When over near the border you will come out near the DIG tree before you cross the Cooper.

We did Brisbane to Innaminka
Left Brissy 3 am and got to Thargo - big day-not really recommended
Lunched at Cunnamulla along the River
Quite a good run on the Black Top as you get further west
Look out for Roos, then Emus,Then Goats
Thargo Caracvan Park was new and nice facilities
Leaving Thargo through to Jackson the road conditions drop off and then the bitumen stops, You head slightly South West to the Cooper and the New Bridge
Stop for a while at the Dig Tree Track gets a little sandy-We saw a Volvo getting through, but hard going in 2 wheel drive
Stay at Cullymurra Water Hole approx 10K east of Innaminka
Make sure you do a run up to the Coongie Lakes from Innaminka .Nice camps around the Lakes to watch all the Birds and wildlife.
We then went up Walkers Crossing to Birdsville
Take some Yabby Pots if you have time

Good comments above to note.
We have been a few times now from Brisbane.
The usual run via St George, Cunamulla, Eulo, Thargomindah etc.
Last time did it in two days, stopping at Cunamulla, but 3 to 4 would be better if you havn't been before.
Left Brisy at 6, Cunnamulla by 4, and that St George to Cunamulla is the most boring bit.
Plenty to see around Eulo, pub, date palm farm, just west and to the north are the opal fields.
Nocundra pub worth a detour, good camping on the Wilson river just across the road.
Thargomindah has a new caravan park/camping site on the west of town, not sure if the old one on the river on the east of town is still there. Last mobile coverage here.
Note - camping at Innamincka is OK on the "town common" , about 90 acres on the Cooper, with drop a $5.00 note in the box, but most other places are by desert park pass from memory, being sth oz. Be an idea to check. Common can get a bit er, well , 'common'.
Of course fuel gets more expensive as you head west, so top up as you go, especially Thargomindah, as it is the last Qld fuel and Innamincka is a lot more expensive. Still visit the trading post at Inamincka and support the locals though. Enjoy toilet and showers on the top of the hill next to the trading post. Visit the old Uniting Church Frontier Mission building where the nurses set up a clinic, which has been preserved. It may have been Methodist or Presbyterian then.

We usually air down the tyres after hitting the dirt near coopers creek. Also, slower travelling after that, so enjoy the scenery. Few small sandy patches and the gibbers around Inamincka make it worthwhile to air down. Friend came back 12 months ago after going that way towing a road going van with his 64 rambler ute, so the roads are not too bad :-).

Can come back via the corner and Tiboburra and Nocundra, or just keep travelling east from Tiboburra to Bourke and Lightning Ridge.
