Green protestors are active once again in East Gippsland near Bendoc. In September they halted work in logging contractor Peter Rodwell's coupe by chaining themselves to his equipment.

The Police Rescue Squad had to be flown down from Melbourne to remove the protestors and several were arrested.

Because the protestors have targeted Peter before and because sabotage has occurred in the area previously, (there are numerous trees in the area which have been cabled by unknown persons to make them dangerous to fall) Peter feels that he has to camp with his machinery to ensure that it is not damaged.

This means for the fosedeeable future the Rodwell family's life will be disrupted by the necessity to live at Peter's place of work.

Country Voice wants to strike a blow against the greens who are campaigning for more parks and also to stand with the Rodwell family in the Australian spirit of mateship.

We are calling for volunteers to camp for two days at a time in Peter's campsite so that he can spend time with his family and know that he is not fighting this on his own.

We want to challenge politicians (especially Labor) to also come and camp out to show that they do not approve of incessant green protests. We want the government to resource DSE and the police to proactively stop green protestors before they invade contractors workplaces.

We only need a 100 people paired up to mount a roster in conjunction with the contractors association. Peter has a comfortable well sheltered camp with accomodation, cooking equipment and shower.

Peter will also conduct forest tours to show how environmentally sustainable logging can be.

So be adventurous, stop the greens and get an education on sustainable forest harvesting. Have the right answer when your grandkids ask "what did you do to stop the greens?"

Ring me if you are interested. I of course will be one of the volunteers.

Perhaps Nudie could help out?

He may have a sniper rifle:-)

Bl00dy ferals. I'd give them 30 seconds warning to disconnect themselves from MY property, then drive off regardless.

Bob,

I hope you find some people to help out.

Why are the greens picking on Peter Rodwell in particular?

Also...."what did you do to stop the greens?"
- isn't that an advertising slogan from WWI?
I think the original said, "Daddy, what did you do in the great war?"

Don't get me wrong... I hunt, I fish, I spend a lot of time in the bush with a 4WD
and I own a chainsaw but I do wonder why people are cutting down old growth trees?

I'm the first to admit this is not an area I know much about: but I do know some species of trees take a long time to grow but others can be sustainably planted and harvested (just like wheat) on a regular cycle and thus would be an industry the land could support for the foreseeable future. So why do we need to log the trees which will take hundreds of years to replace? Especially for pallets?

And, if the Melbourne Age can be believed, I must also ask why Peter cannot hire security guards to look after his commercial interest, quote:

"We generate a lot of income, there's no doubt about that," says Rodwell, 46, in a confessional moment. "But we create a lot of jobs, and that's all there is to it"

Convincing answers to the above would, genuinely, be appreciated.

Yeah! I can never understand the reason for old growth "sustainable" logging either.
But in this day and age, I can't understand comments like these..

"......And, if the Melbourne Age can be believed,........."

:))

If the Melbourne Age can be believed.......jeezuz I can't get myself off the floor from laughing so hard.....

Can we believe any media nowadays??

I would also use SandMans tactics against those ferrals.....No dolebludging-ferral-commie-pinko swine has the right to enforce their will against someone legally going about his work!!
Run 'em over!
You want to protest go tell someone that cares!

Firstly let me say that as a poltician who deals with the media every single day I treat them like politicians and that sort of says it all!

As to forestry practices I think most of us will admit that we need hardwood for building and other purposes. Hardwood has to come from old growth forests. However that forestry can be done in one of two ways:

1: Completely unsustainably and unscientifically which basically trash the place (e.g. some places in eastern Victoria and Tasmania) or

2: Done so the forest is logged in such a way that both the animals and the trees are maintained the next generation.

Up where I live on the north coast of New South Wales I can show you are areas which have been continuously logged for more than 150 years and yet you would hardly know. Many of the so-called Greenies believe these areas to be "pristine" which just shows how stupid they are! Conversely there are examples where very poor management practices or very poor science has caused long-term environmental damage.

Maintaining a viable timber industry means that we will have viable state forests to visit conversely killing off the forestry industry and converting state forests to national parks .... well you know what happens next!

In my somewhat limited experience and this is a purely subjective viewpoint it seems to me that family based logging industries (i.e. the issue in question) are much more aware of protecting the resource in the future then are the large corporates who can hire security guards!

Mike,

Hunting and fishing along with chainsaw ownership are totally irrelevant to this matter and I can only wonder why you preface you post with this info!
It sounds like you have been taken in by the greenie crap using the 'old growth' rubbish. Nobody has yet been able to define old growth to my satisfaction. Most reasonable sized trees are old compared to humans and very old compared to cats and dogs. It is a meaningless emotive term dreamed up by deluded people in an attempt to personalise bits of forest.
I don't support wholesale slaugher of forests but despite what greenies and Age reporters would have you believe that isn't what happens.
As for the Age being believed you must be joking !
The comment above about regrowth being taken as pristine forest is spot on. Much of the Vic forest country has either been burned in massive fires or cut down for mines, a process far more aggressive than logging. It has regrown to the point of being judged as pristine, in some cases even wilderness, always with high natural values, so much so we have made it into a National Park, where is the problem folks ?
The biggest problem with the save the trees mob is they haven't been around long enough to go through the cycle and haven't bothered to look at history.
Ken
