A woman was killed by the four-wheel-drive she'd been travelling in when it rolled down a
hill into her.
The 35-year-old woman was one of two women who had been travelling along Morandoo Street at Mt Keira, near
Wollongong, in the vehicle, collecting items left on the roadside for a council clean-up, at 7.05pm (AEST) yesterday.
Police say it's believed the 40-year-old driver parked on an incline, engaged the
park brake and left the vehicle in fourth gear.
After she and her passenger left the vehicle, it started to roll back down the
hill, hitting the younger woman and causing fatal injuries.
The runaway vehicle crashed into a parked car, shunting it into another empty vehicle, before coming to rest on a footpath on the opposite side of the road, police say.
The four-wheel-drive has been impounded for mechanical tests, while the driver was taken to
Wollongong Hospital suffering severe shock.
Police inquiries are also continuing into an accident at Mascot, in
Sydney's south-east, where a road maintenance worker was killed.

AdvertisementAbout 11.20pm yesterday the man, thought to be aged in his 70s, was walking along the westbound lanes of Airport Drive when he was hit by a reversing maintenance truck.
Ambulance officers treated him at the scene but he died in hospital soon afterwards from head and chest injuries.
The 26-year-old man driving the truck was treated for shock at
St George Hospital and will be interviewed by police at a later date.
Police have already interviewed the driver of a
sedan involved in a fatal collision with a motorcyclist at Longueville, on
Sydney's north shore, but released him without charge pending further inquiries.
Witnesses told crash investigators that the motorcyclist had been accelerating rapidly and riding on the rear wheel only just before the crash about 3.20pm yesterday.
The 29-year-old had been riding on River Road West when his bike collided with a Mitsubishi
sedan at the
intersection of William Edward Street.
He sustained massive injuries and was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating a collision between a car and a mini-bus at Umina Beach on the central coast, in which 10 people were injured.
About 8.15pm yesterday the 12-seater club courtesy bus collided with a
sedan at the
intersection of
Melbourne and
Adelaide avenues.
The mini-bus ended up on its side, trapping the driver and nine elderly passengers.
After being released from the wreckage, all were taken by
ambulance to Gosford Hospital suffering various injuries.

I know Morandoo drive Mt Kiera as a friend of
mine lives there. It is very steep and is a Dead-End road at the top where you need to do a 3 point turn to turn around. Scary stuff and definitely wheel against the kerb, handbrake on and in reverese gear for
parking.
