Wayne,

Could you tell us hopw many km on dirt/stones/gibbers/ etc?

Have you driven in country where you could really test the sidewall strength & resistance to pusticks, stones etc ?

Are you a happy traveller with:
- this km response?
- this degree of chips/cuts/abrasions etc

What vehicle & weight do dou pilot?

Cheers

Outback Rick,
Have a look at Post ID: 27278, Wayne actually mentions some of the technical stuff in there you are asking about the tyres.

Geoff.
Geoff,

Grey hair is hereditary, you get it from children. Baldness is caused by watching the Wallabies.

Rick,
Living in the Sydney area and doing a lot of the trips in another states there is a lot of blacktop driving.
It would be hard to put a figure on the ratio between blacktop and dirt but I would have a guess and say 60% blacktop 40% dirt
The trips that I do now are mostly touring rather than rock crawling.

The most damaging road would have to be from Birdsville to Innamincka via Arrabury and the Dig Tree.
Other tracks/roads that they have been on are The Great Central Road, The Canning Stock Route, The Tamami Track, The Oodnadatta Track, the Strzelecki and a lot of the tracks around the Victoria High Country

The Troopie would have to weigh in at 3t just going to and from work and up to 4.5t when going on a trip.

So far the tyres are 6 months old and have done 35000km and I should get another 35000km out of them.
I placed a post titled "Follow Ups" and there I give a report on what I think of the tyres.

Hi Wayne

Your tyres seem to be doing a bit better than mine. Mine are the earlier model STT's. I have done 20,000km and tread is down to 10mm. About 90% of wear was on dirt roads and one hard, rocky stretch, along the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. I change the tyres around every 5000km.

My tyres have cuts in between the lugs, severe scuff marks on the sidewalls and one or two lugs badly cut and ready to fall off. On one tyre the inside ply has separated and my tyreman has put a gater in. It is on the spare.

I have had no punctures out bush but seem to pick up nails at random around town.

Not sure if I will go with Coopers again.

Willem,

I would like to put it down to the fact that the way I drive the Troopie is easy on tyres but is more likely be the difference between the old and new.
When they finally wear out will be the big test on how good they are and whether they are worth putting back on again.

The next 6 months should also give them a good work out as I will be doing a lot of trips in the Victorian High Country.
If they last 12 months, I will be happy with them. With the BFG's I was only getting 12 months before I replaced them. This was due to the greater risk of getting a puncture when the tread blocks wore down.

Bob,
To post the photos,
1. Down load the photo to the computer
2. Reduce the size of the photo to no more than 50KB. That is the hard bit. I have found it better to take the photo on a camera with a low pixel rating.
3. Click on "My Home" top right of page
4. When this comes up scroll down to the bottom of th page and there is a section to down load 6 photos
You have a photo in your signature at the end of a post so you know how to get this far.
5. At the bottom of the page when you make a new post there is a line that has "Members Add Gallery Picture" Click on this and follow the links.
6.You use the photos from here to add to the post.

David did have a post on how to do it but it was some time ago. If you still have a problem email David or the EO team and they should be able to help.
