People,
Just had to buy two more Cooper ST-C tyres, I left them on the front of my Patrol far too long and scrubbed out edges - fairly normal.
Moved them around for the second time since new and discovered two were very worn, very bleep off with myself for letting it happen, rear tyres still had another 10-20k km left and will stay on the front till I probably sell it in a few months.
Anyway bought two more, asked the tyre
shop what the speedo reading was when I bought the last set, 52000km was the reply, currently the odometer reads 154790 km, yeah thats right just over 100,000km in 18 months.
Corners of tread blocks are still intact, although theres some cracking near the carcass at base of lugs. The Patrol weighs around 2900kg all the time.
Car does arond 50% highway, 40% fast gravel and some mud, (no rocks though). This set also did the Simpson and Coburg peninsula last year when they were new
Feeling much better about the value for money, This is my fourth set 2 x ST, 2 x STC, now and will buy again.
Anyway Im impressed with this and reckon credit is due

JR,
I read your post with interest. I will be needing new tyres pretty soon and am torn between BFG AT's and Cooper AT's. It seems from the many posts on the subject that it doesn't really matter which I get as they both have their good and bad points.
Thanks for the info on your "Cooper" experiences.

I am very suprised that more people arnt leaning towards the MTR's from goodyear , as all rounder I think there magnificent and much better in mud infront of Cooper ST and BFG all terrain . My opinion , is that its the only real all terrain tyre on the market .

My 'old version' STT's are definitely not mud friendly. The tread clogs up very quickly and does not clean out. THey are good in the desert/beach and in rocky situ's

All you guys keep harping on about mud performance.
Well for what it's worth, outside of Victoria there's not that much mud around these days, mostly hot, dry sand and gravel, so most of us don't need mud tyres.
When we do get rain up this end of the country then most travel comes to a stop until it dries out ;-(
Is it woth driving for thousands of K's on muddies, on the bitumen, to get to for example
Cape York, where your muddies MAY help you climb out of a
river crossing a little easier than my AT's?
Also most of us don't have the luxury of being able to have 2 sets of tyres and I know for a fact that AT's perform much better on bitumen (when SWMBO and the Tin Lid are in it going to school) then muddies ever will.
My 2c
Cheers...........

Yeah John
Your comments are only worth 2c :o)
We weren't harping...only stating a fact. When one does come across mud and the tyres under perform, then it is worth noting.
Cheers

Most of us have only nominal use for MT tyres. That shouldn't stop those that do having a chin wag about it.

I spoke to the Goodyear rep at the
Adelaide 4 x 4 show on the w/end about the new Silent Armour tyre.
The tyre looks like an AT style, and has a square edge appearance, not dissimilar in looks to the BFG T/A's that are so poular.
The belt construction that gives the "silent armour" is kevlar.
The rep said to me that it is a bit early to say how they will perform in "tough " conditions. I had described conditions that demand (i.e. tyre killer country) a tyre of Cooper STT or Goodyear MTR, or similar, LT construction with 3 ply walls. He, the rep, suggested I utilise the MTR's.
Price was similar to the others at approx $ 300/tyre.
Cheers

You're joking of course?
Try a trip up the
Birdsville Track just after it has rained. Or any other "dirt" track for that matter.

You got in just before I posted the reply.
Mine was in answer to MrBitchie's silly statement of course.
