Greetings,
Long time no post... nevertheless I was reflecting on our trip to the
Flinders Ranges earlier this year, March to be exact. Not exactly knowing what I was doing we headed up there during a very hot and dry time of year. I have included some pics of our trip.
I suppose the reason for this thread is to see what the Flinders is like in spring (which is the recommended time for going). Would anyone like to share some pics? When we were there all the river beds were dry and you would think the whole area hadn't seen any rain in years, although I don't believe that is the case.
This would serve
well for anyone heading up there in the future and I would also be very inerested to see what the place looks like in spring.

Marko,
Did you do "Skytrek"
The first picture looks as though it may have been taken from the top of Mt. Caernarvon.
Have promised myself to go again during the "wet".
Just need a three-day weekend to justify it.

Howdy... yes the first pic is from up top of Mt. Caernarvon. What great
views!!
Yes I too want to go back in the 'wet'. A friend told me he went in spring many years back and had river crossings and the like. I can only imagine
places like
Warren Gorge with
water running through them - just fantastic!

Marko

The picture of the craggy topped range reminds me of a range here in WA, which is the Windarling Range (
unofficial). 10ks north of Windarling there is a rock named Pigeon Rock.
From the top of Pigeon Rock you can (could) see Windarling's craggy top, which looks like an up-turned hand saw with a few broken teeth.
Whilst at Windarling itself your where able to walk the 2k ridge, which varied in width between 6-12 metres, in amongst large iron monoliths and
pinnacles. Depending on which way one looked at them their features changes. Some of them I named; The Old Man, WA's
Three Sisters, The Finger, The Right Hand, The Eagle Head. It was all quite spectacular. Its uniqueness and tourism potential was massive.
However, now it is all being lost forever, it is being mined for its iron ore.

Question for you Marko,
I gather your tent is an Oztent, what size is it, and how have you found them.
Cheers

Greetings!
Yes its an OzTent RV2,
well it was. I sold it due to additions to the family and have upgraded to an RV4. They cost a lot - but it would be the best tent i have ever bought. Everything is quality! The guide ropes, the pegs, zippers - everything! You do get what you pay for and I will never go back to the dome-tent which I did for almost 10 years.
Its dead simple to setup and I suppose the only problem is they are long when packed - 2m. Doesn't bother me, throw it on the roof racks. The real joy is having it and the bedding done in under 10 mins and beer in hand whilst friends are still laying out the domies and pegging down the four corners - let alone getting the fly on and all the guide ropes that go with it.
Oh yeah... the guide ropes are actually contained within little pockets on the tent too. Im getting excited just thinking about it....
Get one is all I can say... you wont regret it!

Hi Marko,
I managed to get a RV1, I know 2 person and it seems small, picked it up second hand with 2 side walls and the front of the awning, these were still in the oringinal packaging never opened.
An old guy owned it, set the main tent up and fell sick before sleeping in it, ended up in hospital and then sold it, got the lot for $850.00.
We will only be using it for touring so I also like the idea of throwing the tent up, chucking the self inflating mattress in then bed within 10 minutes.
The RV1 is only 1.6 mtrs long so fits in back of the wagon.
Cheers

Forgot to mention will be using it for the first time next week end.
Have put it up in the front yard and really impressed how fast it goes up.

I just got back from the Flinders a couple of days ago - post and email address and I will send you some pics of a fabulously green Flinders Range - including Skytrek. I will send the pics through Picasa so they won't be large.
Cheers

G'day Mark,
have just returned from Wilpena on Wednesday. 44 mmls of rain Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night.
Surprisingly, Bunyeroo and Brachina were open on Wednesday. I made an effort to go through with some overseas visitors, but the
water was too deep for me in there. No
snorkel, and it was a work car (2003 4.2 TD Patrol). I turned around and came out back to the
Blinman road after getting about 3/4 way through
Brachina Gorge.
Will send a few photos to you.
Dave

Marko,
We came back last tuesday after spending four days
camping in the Bunkers. It was very green and plenty of wild flowers were blooming, but the flies were unbelievable. Personally I think this is the best time to visit the Flinders, cool days and not too cold nights.
I have some pics of The Bunkers Ranges HERE. They are the hills that cover some of SkyTrek, including Mt Caernarvon, and I will post some more recent ones soon.
