I am looking at replacing the tyres on my Jackaroo and wondered if anyone had any feedback. Most of my use will be on the road however we do plan to do about 5 or 6 trips per year out of SA so probably need something about 70/30.

I have had suggested Bridgestone D694's or Coopers or something of that nature.

Would appreciate any experience with similar.

Dutts,

I have been using the 694 Duellers on my Jack for about 40,000 K's and for approximately $218 each I think they give value for money. They have plenty of tread depth still and give good performance both on and off road. Fairly quiet on the blacktop as well.

If you are seeking an even cheaper tyre with similar performance, check out the Desert Duellers. I bought a set of 3 for the Camper Trailer and they cost $168 each from the Bridgestone Retail Outlet. I wasn't aware of these when I bought the 694's and would have no hesitation to run them on the Jack.

There may be better tyres around, but probably at a higher cost.

Have done 70,000 plus on BFG AT's with a mix of 3-4 trips a year to Vic High Country, Sand, and mud. They still have 20,000 left in them, still have good lugs with none of them breaking off as you read on here that Coopers are prone to. Will replace with same again without any doubts.

The new Cooper AT is the one to go for. Get the 245/75SR16 which is available as a 6 or 10 ply.

The previous AT which I am running in 245/70SR16 is rated for 50000k versus this new model which is rated for 80000k. If you go 265/75SR16 8 or 10 ply the rating goes up to 90000k but you may be illegal with this tyre size.

With conditions, (basically are a wheel alignment every 10000k which I don't do cause the Jack doesn't need it) they guarantee 80000k or 90000k.

For the big trip next year I will go for the STT in 265/75R16 in 10 ply just because I can and I figure this will give me the best available sidewall and tread puncture resistance. I'll be fitting them to a set of steel wheels to replace the alloys for the trip!

I'm half way through my second set of BFG's - 245/70R16 - USA made - have not not had a flat yet - got them on the Campomatic camper too - have done quite a few decent bush trips with them to date - recently over a lot of sand, stones, sticks and rock crawling up slopes - top shelf in all respects. Around $275 a piece in SA. We run lower pressures in the rough areas (not just the sand), and I think the biggest factor is to take it easy when the pressures are down - very conservative speeds.

Hi,

I run Cooper ST on my Jack - 245x75x16. Am extremely happy with them. Done 40K so far without any problems, including Cape York (& all OTL).

Presviously had Cooper AT's (passenger construction) - which were no good on a trip to Kimberley/Pilbara - 3 puntures & ruined 1 tyre - Coopers did a deal to upgrade me to ST's,

Willy

Hi Dutts
A couple of us in the club use Scorpians from pirelli, I am on my second set now, I have never had a puncture in these tyres and would recommend them to anyone.

Being in a club I do a fair bit of off roading through mud/sand sharp rocks etc and have never doubted the ability of the tyres to handle the terrain.
Cheers
Chris
