Hi,first time poster.Great source of info!
I've recently bought a '94 petrol auto ,love it.Have read lots of posts re:fuel consumption in 80 series 'cruisers. My vehicle has less than 60k on the clock and I can't get any better than 24/100 around town or on highway, driven very carefully (not more than 100kph). I have taken roofrack off, still have bullbar etc.Have had it checked out by Toyota and everything is fine according to tester.Love the power compared to diesel, but too expensive to drive.Has anybody had similar problems, any suggestions as to possible causes.
Don't have lead foot, used to get 13-16/100 average out of 1HZ.
Car has done less than 5k in past 4 years, maybe something to do with it.
Have serviced, changed plugs, filters etc. and cleaned injectors.

Am seriously considering LPG conversion. Can anyone advise on best set-up for '94 4.5 with snorkel?
Also, does anyone know of good fitter in Nth Qld?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Welcome to the forum Mr Breeze.
I am usually the one asking questions so it is a bit of a change to answer some of yours.
I too have a 94 automatic 80 series ( no snorkel) and on a recent trip to Broome with a Thule Roof Basket (and bullbar) ,towing a Jayco Freedom achieved the following results.

LPG
3212Kms 30.5 Litres per 100 Km Cost per Kilometer 23cents

PETROL
9858 Kms 22.26Litres per 100 Km Cost per Kilometer 30c

Unfortunately I had a backfire running on LPG and was unable to complete the trip using LPG, and the extra cost on petrol was just over $700. Backfire appears to be due to an arc in standard ignition leads , which had been on vehicle for some 200000 kms.
Check out this thread on my LPG problem

I had trouble free LPG running for over 100000kms, and my troubles started when a detailer washed down under bonnet.

Good luck with your other queries.

Thanks for the reply Pedro,I know there are a few posts on these subjects but I'm not having much luck with the searching.

(I'll learn to drive these computers oneday).

Can you recommend anyone in Qld to do the gas setup?

I think the best thing to do first up is investigate the various LPG systems available at the moment.
My Impco system was installed 8 years ago and , prior to the problem caused by washing under bonnet, gave over 100000kms of trouble free motoring.
Having established which system you want I would then look around for the company that specialises in that system.
Reason for this is that you would not go to a ford dealer to get a holden serviced. Or in my case take an Impco LPG system to someone who specialises in xzy system. I originally thought that all LPG installers would have the know how to service all systems, however the number who told me my set up was incorrect shows it is best to deal with specialists.
Perhaps if you approach Toyota and see which system they use and discuss with other owners this might give you a lead.
Impco specialist in Brisbane is Metropolitan Auto Gas Ph 32560333 (scott/Tanith ) .

Good luck
Pedro

Hi there Mr Breeze,I take it you will be taking the 80 off road, my mate has his on gas and the tank is loacted where the spare originally goes, tank hits on just about everything, pain in the ar@e. I would be asking the question to other forum members to see if there is any other place the tank can be mounted. My mate runs both lpg and petrol as gas can be hard to get in the scrub. So just gas wasn't an option for him, maybe there is also different size tanks available so you wont have this problem. He has no problems with it otherwise but we are in sydney I can find out for you if you like they may have an outlet up your way mind you the bash plate that is under the tank is a joke about 2mil thick coke can would be stronger.Your fuel figures sound a little high compared to his on petrol. He averages about 18/20 round town on petrol (Manual) but doesn't tow any thing so can't really compare. Little bit higher 20/22 on gas. Regards Vitara

Your right 24L/100 is shocking - even on LPG!

I have typically managed about 20L/100 on LPG - never run petrol so dont know - expect 15%-20% better.

Thats on a 2800kg car (empty but with all the accy adding up such as snorkel, bullbar, winch, scrub rails, kaymar .....)

Toyota dont recommend LPG on any of their non LPG cars. The dealer may differ. If you go LPG consider somebody like Air Reseacrch, as they do a lot of LPG & LPG performance engines. Modern LPG systems should NOT use the IMPCO type 225/ 425 mixers - but an electronically controlled difuser ring instead (less restriction & better mixture control).

Get the O2 sensor checked, advance the ignition a couple of degrees. Change the leads, and plugs first, then the dissy cap (toyota only $$$).

If you have a +2" lift, LPG tank wont be too much of an obstacle for moderate off road use.

Thanks for the response.
Toyota tested the engine with their diagnostic gadet and there were no errors, including 02 sensor.
I'll replace the leads and advance the timing and hopefully this will help.

Very frustrating with the current price of fuel, flat out getting 500klms from both tanks.
I used to get 800-1000 out of my 1HZ 80.

Also was quoted $2200 for LPG instalation 2 months ago,now $3400.
Funny eh!
