Hello
Have recently joined the caravan set and am surprised at the inefficiency of ulp motor in an AU ford. Am considering moving to diesel power however $$s are a problem,at the moment we looking at a Ssangyong Rexton with a 2.7lt turbo charged 5 cylinder diesel. Can somebody advise if this would satisfactorily tow a 17ft single axle poptop around the hill country of the NSW south areas in particular.
Thanks

Don't know about the Rexton, but my Jeep has a genuine Mercedes-built 2.7 common-rail turbo-diesel pushing (in stock form) 120kw and 400nm at 1200-odd rpm. I think that the Rexton isn't too for behind these figures.

Given that, I use ours to pull a similar van (in terms of overall weight and size) and I hardly even know it's back there. I laugh when people go to great lengths to get into the lane beside me at the lights and bank up because they don't want to get caught behind the slow diesel 4WD with the caravan on the back. Their faces change when I zip right past the lot of them when the lights go green.

Modern common-rail t/d's are phenomenal performers. One would tow your van without even thinking about it.

Oh - I forgot. With the van on the back I'm still getting 11.5-13L/100km in hilly country at 110kmh (which is a bit fast - I know).

i dont know if the vechile will tow it

but i had a ssangyong 1996 musso
biggest pile of bleep ever made
it was that bad it was shipped to sydney for 3 months and returned with problems unfixed. i brought it to take my family safely around australia but was to scared to take it off the main roads as it was that unreliable.

buy a second hand toyota/nissan they will tow it with ease and will actually get you back

Hi,

we have a gu Patrol, which has 116kw

We drag a trailer (approx 800kg-1000ks) and it does it with ease.

At the kw mentioned earlier in the merceded, you would have no problems

They are Efficient when they are not lugging 17Foot of caravan.

What are you getting we towed a 18 foot boat up to shark bay about 3 years ago and got about 15-16 per hundred, at 100 wile running the air-conditioner.

The 2.7 diesel is the newest Ssanyong diesel (pity they don't put it in the uste version which gets the older 2.9) and will tow your van with ease and economy.

Your resale value will be shocking and you might want to look as a Hyundai Terracan instead, for about the same price but will hold value better.

Toyotas hold their value best but you pay for it at every service so the overall cost of owning a Toyota would be arguably no better than a Ssanyong or Hyundai.
