Fellow fisherpersons.....
Would like to attach a 100mm stormwater pipe to an ARB roof rack. The supports for this rack bulge out so the pipe doesn't sit snuggly against the rack. I called Kaymar hoping they would have a brackets that bolt onto the rack like the jack/shovel holder they sell and no go. Has anyone seen a suitable bracket out there?

The ones I have seen are home made using the brackets you can buy from the hardware
places

I used the brackets from a handware store when I first attached my 100mm rod pipe to the caravan bumper. They aren't strong enough to handle constant vibration and ended up breaking off, mind you that was on the
Oodnadatta Track.

I had the same problem, i fitted some 25mm(may have been 38mm) sq Aluminiium Tube with ubolts to the top and bottom rail and then fitted the fishing rod tube to the Aluminium tube.
The Sq tube fills
the gap between the rack and the tube nicley

Mate I just came back from a 2 week trip to Fraser and I really miss my rocket launchers on the bull bar that I had on my last 4B because taking these big rods on and off were killing me ( Im a little height challenged !)
so I was thinking of a way of making launchers that were easy to take on and off the BB and didnt scratch the powdercoat or an easy way to fit them to roof racks without those crapy ocky straps ??
ANY IDEASE ???
Regards J.B.

Mate of
mine used very large pipe clamps on his ARB rack ( I think he used 3) which seem to work.
I gave up on
mine, I attached it to the caravan rear bumper and that's where it stayed.
If I carry rods, two piece, not including surf rods, I use a rod bag attached to the internal grab handles above the doors by way of the velcro rod straps. The bags and straps were obtained from a tackle
shop.

G'day Leroy,
I have that exact set-up on my Patrol.
I drilled a half inch hole in each of the 3 supports so that the it is just above the steel framework (lower), which on
mine has wire mesh floor. Through each of the holes, I inserted a short length (about 6") of half inch threaded rod, held firmly in place with a nut on both sides. This bar protrudes outward from the bar (of course). The PVC pipe sits on top of this and I then used 3 large screw-up s/steel clamps around the pipe, through a slit that alteady exists in the ARB rack's bracket, and over the top bar of the ARB rack. Never moves.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Roachie

I made my own roof rack and put captive nuts in the bar ends to take either a rod tube or awning.
More by good luck than good management I found that the stand off used for mounting the storm
water pipe on the outside of sheds from a plumbers supply place had exactly the same thread so I use those.
Most of my fishing is predominantly bitumen based with only short runs off road to access the river so vibration hasn't been an issue. I also used high tensile rather than mild steel bolts - so I figure if it fails it'll be the plumbing supply part that breaks.
That said the plumbing supply part has clamping bolts either side which would be fairly simple to brace from there to the roof rack. This would probably solve that problem.
You could still use the plumbing mounts and just bolt through the bulged sides into the plumbing mount.
Also for security I ran a 10mm drill through opposing sides of the end cap while it was on the threaded pipe end. Once deburred it still unscrews nicely. Then I have a long coach bolt that I drop through the end and with the thread end cut off and a small hole drilled in the end of the bolt I can drop a small padlock through it.
Wouldn't stop a determined thief but certainly makes me feel better about leaving a few hundred dollars in rods up there when I'm in the bait
shop or the bottle
shop - or the pub if the fishing was crap.

G'day Leroy,
I used a piece of Rhino rack and fixed it vertically on the rack then used their pvc pipe fittings. Works just great. I have also used the plumbing type fittings and have only found one that really works but have not found that style for the 100mm pipe. What I've found, like the others, is that these fitting don't hold together under continuous pounding.
Kind regards

I used 3 stainless steel pipe clamps on each end of the pvc pipe which i mounted on the front of my ARB trade rack, the pipe is used to store canvas ground sheet, poles , my stunt kite, the pipe has two screw on end caps as you can see in my rig profile.

Thanks for your input guys. You have given me plenty of ideas to look into now. I also liked the cap locking pin idea to keep the thieves away! Pity you always have to think about them whenever you make something.

The "Rhino Rack" Alloy Pipe Clamps are the best I have come across.
Don't know if they would suit an ARB rack but I certainly recommend them.

I used 25mm tube with a bracketing system to attach the tubes across the existing roof rack. I was then able to attach a 150 mm sewer pipe to the tubes via rubber straps.
The whole set up cost approx $25
waiting for photos from last trip to update my rig picture
cheers

Hey Leroy,
Here is another idea for you....take the 100mm tube and slide a piece from the back to front between the upper and lower ARB tube rails on the inside instead of mounting on the outside. Nestle it against the inside of the bar uprights and fix inplace
Where the tube is actually sandwiched by the ARB rack tubes there would be some slight deformation but other than that should be good and only requires a strap either end to hold secure. Extend the 100m tube about another 12 inches either end and the deformation goes away and end caps can be fitted.
Regards,
Stuart M.

Don't forget to get UV stabilised PVC pipe and the reinforced end caps. It is a bit embaressing/dangerous when you come to a sudden stop but your poles keep going.
