Any one know of a store in
Perth that has a range of 7"-10.5" TFT monitors that can be installed in a car and connected to a laptop. I know that I can find
places on the net but would like to have a look at them first in a store
Thank you
Cheers

You could try the usual
places like Tricky Dickies/Tandies but don't like your chances. Have a look at eBay.

Hi George, I went through this exercise about 12 months ago without any luck. Apparenty all the dealers in this type of equipment are either in the Eastern States or on the internet. Ended up getting one on eBay. Cheers.

Hi George,
I will check with a mate, he spotted them somewhere in the West earlier this year when travelling through, but after checking prices got me to get him one and send it to him when he arrived at
Broome, seems it was about $150 more than i could get it for, but I will ask where he spotted them.

George
Jaycar Electronic which are located at 326
Newcastle St in Northbridge advertise these sort of screens. Not sure if they have any in stock but worth a call.

George,
Pilbara Wayne above is spot on. Jaycar has them.
Jaycar - TFT Screens
They also stock a 7" Touch Screen, although this is not yet shown in the Catalogue or online search.

The advantage of the Touch Screen is that you can "drive" the PC via the screen, without needing a mouse, etc. The touch screen connection runs off a USB port and a software driver is supplied with the Screen.
The standard TFT Screen is simply a monitor, so all you can do is look at it.

G'day Sand man,
Goes to show how much in the dark I am. This is the first I've heard about these screens (other than those used in ATM's and the like) for car use. They sound great, how big do they come? Are they practical - can you see enough on them to use them for maps and the like?
Kind regards

G'day Sandman,
just had a look on Ebay and get the drift. It seems you have some experience in these matter - so what should I be looking out for in going this way?
Kind regards

Hi Beatit,
Practical? I hope so, that's why I bought it. My Wife doesn't like the encumbrance of a Laptop sitting on her lap.
The 7" screen gives a good sized definition for reading maps. Anything much smaller and you lose definition. Anything much bigger and you may as
well use the laptop's screen.
My original thoughts were to mount the whole laptop above the centre console, but the cost of a laptop holder was an additional US$200 and doubled the delivery costs.
My intention is to use it to run Oziexplorer and at present, DiscoverAus and or Great Desert Tracks.
The 7" Touchscreen also comes with a little plastic pointer tool to activate individual menu items that are too small to touch individually with a finger.
I am still in the process of setting it up and intend using it "in anger" this coming weekend.
I haven't personally seen the size of definition available from a PDA that some forumites use, but would guess the 7" screen is better. (bigger)
The one I purchased from Jaycar was $549 complete. Not cheap, but comparable in price to the Lilliput screens obtainable from overseas, when you factor in the delivery costs. At least with this one, we have an Australian distributor with a local warranty should it be required.
The Touchscreen also has an additional input port for a rearview
camera or similar, but if I was mounting one of these, I think I would prefer the screen to be in place of the rear view mirror. Time will tell.

Thanks Sandman,
Just looked on Ebay, the Lilliput screens are just over $200 + mailing. This doesn't have a local waranty but I wonder what can go wrong with these things other than screen burnout (total loss).
Where did you end up mounting your screen? Guess don't want it interfering with the vision but close enough to see - right. And wouldn't want some expensive mounting system (good point about using the lappie).
Kind regards

Thanks to everyone for their input. I will be out this morning checking the various monitors. Sounds like the 7" touch screen is the way to go. When I have selected the monitor most suitable, installed and tested it, I will post a report on it's practicality and set up
Cheers

Howdy, JAYCAR have a very nice 7" 12v Touch Screen TFT advertised in their November Birthday Sale flier. Priced at $549.00 Looks like it comes with a swivel base that could easily be used for a satisfactory installation in a 4wd etc. Go to this site JayCar Electronics
p.s. I am NOT affiliated with JayCar in any way - JUST another happy customer
