After doing my 3rd front diff in 19 months I think its time to try and get a solid axle in there. The cash for the rebuild can go towards the job hopefully.
Who are best to ask in the
Sydney area? I'm located in
Wollongong.
Thanks for any links.

I'd be talking to offroadindustries.com also in
sydney. They do the swap on the surfs/lux and even Pajeros. They seem to specialise in this sort of thing.
The wheel offset thing could be a pain but your suggestion of wheel spacers at the front might be simplest, cheapest option-although not strictly road legal.
Cheers
Matt

From what I've heard (may be wrong) from bods that do solid axle swaps on surf's, hiluxes etc they have been asked to do the same to IFS 100 series but it isn't possible as the chassis rails are totally different (wider apart from memory and with no hump to clear solid axle) so the solid front end will not fit.
A solid axle isn't the cure for smashed front diffs either, solid axle 100's trash front diffs as
well, can find a few bods that have done as many as you in the same time frame.

I've heard something about the chasis being widder once before, but as for putting in a front diff the 105's (rigid 100's/hilux) diff would probably the last one I'd want to put in, OK secound last the original being the last one.
What's the diference in width between the Toyota and sourcing one from the dark side (Patrol diff)

Hi
The ifs 100 uses a different chassis to the solid front 105. It is actually an 80 series chassis with longer body mounts for a wider body...Now, the IFS final drive ratio is probably 4.1, where as the solid diff final drive is 4.3, so there are a few problems looming that you need to consider b4 u start changing stuff
1 why r u busting them??? do u snatch in reverse??
2 have u considered an ARB locker in the front? (They stiffen up the diff and make it stronger, even in the rfs model)

Andrew,
1. Yes , and No I don'tsnatch in reverse
2. I have front and rear ARB air lockers (front isn't turned on unless the climb is straight- no real turning)

Forget the solid axle swap, they are no better. I have blown 4 in my 105, only one on a track I would call extreme. Toyota put a Hilux diff in a Cruiser so what more can you expect. The accepted fix in Victoria is to fit an ARB locker, replace the collapsable spacer with a machined one &
check that everything is in line & running true. Under Warrenty Toyota just slap them in & as they aren't diff specialists, they are more likely to blow the next time round. (I did 3 in 20K)
Ring Darren at ATS in
Geelong, he'll have contacts in
Sydney that can do it right. He has repaired over 30 without one coming back that wasn't abused.

What you will find , is that the front part of the chassis is whats diffrent , you will have to get a front half chassis from a standard cruiser and graft it onto your chassis , for this the body will have to come off . It sounds like a nightmare , but not so bad , . Make sure you get a qualified person to do this job.

You can do anything as long as you are willing to pay for it. I'm guessing it's the front diff you keep busting. You could do a solid axel swap but you will have to change front and rear and possibly your driveshafts. Not sure on the ratios in a petrol GXL but the diesels are 4.3, none of this will be cheap and will have to be engineered. If you change your ratios you will throw your speedo out. I'm sorry to say but - you may need to have a look at your driving style!! 3 diffs in that time is pretty hard on the pocket! It would probably cost you less to Buy a fairly nex GXL and drop a v8 chev diesel into it if you want grunt. With regards to crackles comments about the solid axel not being much better, I hav a HZJ 105 with an aftermarket turbo. I tow a camper trailer everywhere and give it a good flogging off road and have yet to bust a diff. I do
rock , sand mud and anything else that I can throw at it. It has done 175,000k's and 70 of these were in a coal
mine in Vic. The olly major drama I have had was a transfer case issue.
Chaos in silverwater (if you can get hold of them) may be able to help if you really want to do this...but I'd
check with the bank first.
Good luck with it!

I take things on fairly slowly due to my lack clearance, and I don't bounce the thing over rocks etc
Diff 1. whent before front locker installed
Diff 2. whent due to giving it a little bit of a hard
Diff 3. hasn't really had to do anything at all

Busted what actually broke in the diffs each time.
Did it strip teeth of the crown wheel or something else?
I have ARB lockers front and rear and have also stripped 5 teeth of the front crown wheel, Doing a track that I didn't regard as to extreme.
Make matter worse, IFS 100 Series on the same trip/track did the same.
Two diff's on the sane track must be a record.

ive a 2002 ifs td 100 and we give this a good going at most tracks.
The boys we travel with have patrols and 80 series live axels .
mate you must be flogging the shiiit out this truck .
wehave travelled over the past 3 yaers some of the hardest track in the
vic high country ad none of our trucks have ever broken anything ,as for myself having an ifs you should know that you drive them a little different to a live axel .
remember the
turtle and the hare... slowerly slowerly wins the race.

I'm copping in from the mates for taking some things too slow, you know once bitten twice shy but three times. some mates feel it could be the guys which put the locker in.
1. busted the front diff (1) and Toyota repaired it, a week latter I took it in and had front and rear lockers put in by a store near by. I did a CV my bad.
2. Front diff (2) goes doing a trail some
rock steps but It wasn't bouncing around I was easing it up as you would your family
sedan up over those rolled gutters. (work carried out by the buisness who did my lockers)
3. Front diff (3) goes driving a bloody dirt road???????????
