Hi all, that time of year again for me the insurance is up and was looking for a reputable 4wd insurer that will cover me off road.
Can anyone recommend a company?
By the way I'm
Sydney, if that makes any difference.
Thanks,
Babs.

Babs, if you are a member of a 4x4 club, ring TCIS Insurance on 1800 633 745. I have heard they are trying to get really competetive on price again after blowing out a few years ago. I'm not insured with them or on their payroll, its just the info thats come down from the 4 Wheel Drive Assn. At least worth a call, the policy certainly seemed to be good quality when I was with them, it was just a price issue back then.

I just insured with TCIS because they cover 4WD accidents not always covered by others.
Price was around other no-claim insurance we get. Sp not cheaper, but better cover.

DGA Insurance Brokers in
Melbourne. They specilise in 4wd insurance and we are insured "Anywhere" in Australia. They are OK on modifications so long as you declare them. Pity about no under 25's though but not a problem for us.

I think you'll find that like most insurers, if your declared mods make the car illegal on the road - i.e. don't comply to the ADR's, you are not covered. They put the mods on your policy, but it is not up to them to ensure their road legality. They will most likely drop you if it turns out your car was illegally modified at the time of a prang.

sky pilot,
I think that would only happen if the illigal mods played a part in causing the accident.

Fraid not. I know of a case where an insurance assessor came around to the crash repairer to inspect a car that may have had some mods. His motivation was not paying out on the claim. There were no mods, so he ended up with egg on his face. The repairer knew the car owner and let him know what happened. The company involved was supposedly AAMI.
Another one, a mate of
mine was involved in a crash which was not his fault and his tyres were deemed by the insurance assessor to be illegal. He received no pay out and the car was a write off.
