Planning a trip from Qld to Broom via Derby/Kununarry - Gibb River Rd.
Are the tracks (into the gorges etc) dried out by end of May,
or are we better leaving it till August?

I realise it depends on the intensity of the wet season, but would appreciate feedback from those who have done the trip, or know the area.
Thanks............

Try March/April - before the tour 'cowboys' get into full swing, only probs you will possibly encounter are washaways on roads not repaired, so be prepared. August very dry with heaps of dust and 'tours', limited water etc etc,

So each to his own

too early usually. I did it in late april after the feeble wet of 02 03 and mitchel falls had just been open but bells gorge was still closed. But otherwise road was v good and camping space was plentifull

Went down GRR in August - quite busy, but not overly so and temperatures around 30-35degrees c.

Road variable - after this years wet, which by all accounts was drier than normal (save for the cyclone effects). We found plenty of water for bathing and washing etc, and most of it OK for drinking but we used filters etc.

Risks at each end (april to AUg/September) so go with what suits you depending on how you are travelling.

Cheers

Rick,

G'day Keith,
I'm going that way every year, usually between June and end of August.
Earlier than June it could be that some areas are still inaccessible.
This photo was taken July 7th 2002 and the Road up to the Mitchell Falls was only that day opened again after they fixed the King Edward River crossing by dumping rocks into the river.
Of course you are right, it always depends on the severity and lateness of the WET.
If it wasn't much of a WET then the Mitchell Falls may stop running as early as mid July to early August, although there will still be plenty of water in the pools.
The busiest stretch of road always seems to be the detour into Bell Creek. Lots of work has been done on this track over the past years and it should be open quite early.
Of course there will be tour groups, but they too start there as soon as the roads are open again.
Ann from Drysdale River station would be able to give you up to date info.
In 2004 and 2005 I went with 3 cars and found the traffic on the GRR less of a problem than on the CSR!

If you are going further south than Broome and want to see the Wildflowers then late July / August is ideal.

Enjoy your trip,
Mike

Anne (Ithink) at Drysdale River Homestead often contributes here - she would be an authority on access, road conditions, seasons etc for that region - a quick search of the archives will get you her email address.

We went through in May 04 and had no problems. There was a little water over roads in places , the streams and rivers were still flowing, the falls falling etc.which makes it all that more interesting. We were lucky in that we were able to get to all the places we wanted too, some roads were good (just graded) and some were real shockers- into the Mitchell falls for example. Daytime temps were 30 - 35 , nights mild - all in all , very enjoyable.

Keith,

We went through in April this year to find thwe Mitchell Plateau still closed, as well as Lennard Gorge and Bells Gorge.

Bells Gorge was closed only because there was not a Ranger in attendance. I spoke to the Ranger at Windjana Gorge, and he was still waiting for a replacement there before he could move up to Bells Gorge.

Road condition was quite good. Western end is probably okay for conventional vehicles with care. Well it was this year anyway.

Geoff.
