Using 4B to tow gang mower

With recent excellent rainfall the roos have been unable to keep up and the grass around the house has grown pretty thick and high. It was bare dirt a few months ago. With a few snakes making their presence felt I have been told to do something about the grass. The old ride-on mower won't start, and pushing the Victa over about 5 acres doesn't appeal. Thinking laterally, I wondered why I couldn't tow a gang mower behind one of the vehicles. Does anyone know who makes or sells ground driven mowers?

Aahhh Bob. Taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut :)))

Fix the ride-on or mow around the homestead 20 to 50 metres. That'll make the wrigglies think twice about interrupting your leisure time.

You could get some Guinea Fowls so you'd at least have enough warning to get the 410 or 12g if that's your fancy :))))))

Bob

Recently faced the same problem - 5 acres of Pattersons Curse, no ride on, no mower. Eventually hired a slasher (heavy duty lawn mower) and cut 3 m fire breaks around fenceline, and about 10 - 15 metre break around the house. The rest I have left until next time.
Why not have a look at tow behind mowers that would usually attach to a quad or ATV? With a few simple mods I'm sure that they could be hooked up to a tow ball. I have been looking at this, but ran out of time to organise before fire breaks were due. Most Bike Shops could advise who sells tow behind mowers (or google it).

If in WA, I think Alroh sell a tow behind, but not 100% sure.

Regards

RD

Bob, I've got a Mow & Tow that i tow behind the 4W bike or it can be towed by a car/4WD. It has a 13hp motor with 3 blades under and cuts a bit wider than the bike, does a great job on braken.

Most of the ground driven ones I've seen were horse dawn.

Hi Tony, what brand is it?
It must be like a mini slasher that fit on the back of tractors and run off PTO.

Regards

Mark.

G'day Mark, it's called a "MOW & TOW". It has it's own motor on top, a Honda 13hp which drives three cutter blades under the deck via belt driven pully on top of each set of blades.

A draw bar with tow ball attachment. The draw bar can be off set so the mower sticks out the side, good for getting close to fences or under low fruit trees.

Great unit, adjustable for height from 1" to 6", and get about 2 hours to the tank.

mate for the cost of a tow mower, you could trade the ride on in for a flash new john deere ride on.

Saw a ride on the other day that had twin stubbie holders built in !!

good thought, but by the time you add the spotties, roo bar,Engel, UHF etc the cost blows out too much.

in the types of area you are talking of there are usually a few blokes around who supplement their income with their tractor and slasher. Arnt there any sighns blocks slashed around the place?? just make the call and crack a beer while someone else does it

My son has a 5 acre block and a tow and mow. Periodically I take my ATV (4 wheel motorbike) and he mows. Takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the grass.

*You'll use a lot of fuel in 2 to 4 hours in a 4B.
*Offset the tow point on 4B so that the right hand side of mower is level with right hand side of 4B.
*New tow and mow costs about 3 grand. Second hand ATV cost me 2 grand.
*Riding the ATV is much more fun than riding a mower.

Laurie.

Bob, don't forget that you can hire sit on mowers as a short term solution. eg while yours is getting fixed. Sit ons are either a pain or a joy. Mine is around 15 years old and still turns jungle into lawn...for about a week. The problem is that it knows when growing season is, and refuses to do any work until its had several hundred dollars spent on it.

Hey Bob

Go and find a piece of railway track or a really heavy steel fencepost and drag it behind your 4by on chains or steel cable. Y

ou should be able to flatten the grass of 5 acres within an hour.

Thanks all for the replies. Disappointed no-one suggested crop dusting with roundup.
I thought the towed option might be cheap - wrong.
Lookout Kennards, here I come.
