Has anybody used Biodiesel? Prowling around on the web there doesn't seem to be much wrong with it and my local truck (and occasional 4WD) mechanic says it should be fine. Any members had direct experience? Luke.

Haven't used biodiesel myself, but I have plenty of customers who use it without problem. Bear in mind that biodiesel can be many things...there is no set standard for it like diesel. There can be wide quality fluctuations batch to batch depending on the care taken in producing it.
Land Rover warn against its use in their 2005 Td5 diesel. They don't say why, but I suspect it could affect the catalytic convertor. It's worth checking the manufacturer's stance with anything under warranty.

With the landy I seem to remember it was a fuel pump that failed.
I found an article on bio fuel and put it on my site

When biodiesel was first released here, people had major issues with blocked fuel filters. Allegedly it was the fact that biodiesel was removing the scum from the fuel lines and
tank, and dumping it in the filters. Had one friend who replaced 2 fuel filters, before giving up on it.
Since then, it appears the same company is offering a blend of biodiesel. I've had no experience with the latter.

I have used it lots with no problems, not even clogged filters.
I was buying it for $1.10 in Maitland untill I broke the trailer and am not confident it will handle another 250kg drum being tipped over in it.
Works same as diesel, cheaper, less smoke/soot and smells better. whats not to like about it.
I also lived in the edge and would empty the oil out of the deep fryer into my drum (filtered of course) which would get me a free trip to work.
Do a search on the overlander
forum as I have put the contact details there (might be here too, can't remember)

I use Biodiesel about every 5th
tank, I also used it in my 80 Series Landcruiser. It does have a lower energy value than petroleum diesel, you will notice when putting the foot down around town and notice slightly higher fuel consumption. The main reason I use it, is that it is great for cleaning out fuel systems, on my 80 Series LC when I first started using it I had to replace the fuel filter after the second
tank and found it was clogged with crap, this resulted in an improvement in fuel efficiency. Biodiesel also has a higher lubricity than ordinary diesel so it is probably good for the longevity, and people do comment on having an exhaust that smells like hot chips.

check www.journeyforever.com for biodiesel
Trouble is in Oz you are supposed to give the tax man his excise, even if you make it for your own use.

thanks for all the replies. sort of backs up what I've found elsewhere (especially a new
forum which seems good
http://www.sydneybiodiesel.com/). seems newish vehicles are all okay with newer non-natural rubber fuel lines and seals and the biodiesel seems better for the engine than fossil diesel (better lubrication, no black smoke, and yes, the nice "hot chips" smell). I've got some coming down in a week or so to try in my 89 Hilux so will be able to give
feedback to anyone interested after that.
cheers,
Lucas
