Hi all
Have read the trek notes and great info on the drive but does anyone have any great suggestions for
overnight camp spots?
We will do the trip May 2006 and expect 2 nights along the way if there are worthwhile spots. Will be in our camper trailer.

Got a gps? Traveling from Alice to
Halls Creek, about 15 - 20 km past the NT / WA boarder look for a bush track on the left - very hard to see unless you are traveling slow S 19 53.133 E 128 37.930 This is a small quarry where material has been removed for road fill. Only about 70 - 80 metres off the road but there is a good track in and a cleared area to
camp on. In case of rain don't
camp in the excavated depression, there are signs that it has filled with run-off in the past!

Hi,
Don't over look Wolfe
Creek crater. I know its close to the end but not a bad place to
camp. There was also a dry
creek bed about half way (it is shown as a
camping spot on most maps) this was pretty good as
well (we had a 50th birthday party here).
Kind regards

Make sure you see the movie "Wolf Creek" first. Supposedly sent in the
Kimberley and at Wolfe
Creek Crater but actually shot in SA. You can't
camp at
the crater itself but there is good
camping at
Carranya station about 7 k's away. Rumour is that John Jarrat does frequent the station campgrounds but be warned anyway.

You can
camp at
the crater. I camped there about three months ago, the
campsite is about 800 metres from
the crater. There were people there with vans as
well. A great spot. Got up at dawn and watched the sunrise from
the crater rim.
I was by myself, so I was glad I hadn't seen the movie Wolf
Creek.

Yeh, we also camped there and found it a great place to stay with just our little group till about 7 pm when another car pulled up. Ciouldn't see much of them from where we were but I am also glad we didn't see the movie beforehand. The other half would have freaked. We enjoyed the sunset and the moonrise (about 10 PM) was a full moon and looked great. Worked out the moonrise from watching the staircase at
Broome.
Kind regards

The site described I think as the quartz
hill, is an ideal
campsite, certainly the best we found along the Tanami. You travel past
the Granites a little way and look for a small
hill on the left with a rock cairn on top. A track leads over the
hill to a quiet cleared area. You can watch but not hear the huge mining trucks at night running along the horizon. A nice spot.

We did the trip in June 2005
Quartz Ridge was our first
camp after
Alice Springs - turnoff is S 20 29 42.3, E 130 14 21.6
Easy trip then to
Sturt Creek where we camped beside the
waterhole - many birds here
We were planning to
camp at Wolfe
Creek but was hot and the "dry season easterly" was blowing a gale - could hardly stand on top of
the crater
We went to
Halls Creek instead

Nice camp at
Sturt Creek east of Bililuna
I recall a small space at the
WA/NT Border.
In days gone by Bruce Farrands would let you
camp at Rabbit Flat for free if you bought something there and did not complain about the price lol
From Rabbit Flat to Alice there isnt much in the way of campsites as the spinifex comes right to the side of the road. One used to be able to
camp at the Old Granites
mine site but I think that it is fenced off now.

We camped at the
ruins of an old
homestead further along from
Yuendumu a few times, northern side of the track, there is a small mountain/
hill and an old track goes around the northern side. about a k off the road from memory.
