Yeagarup Dunes

Last weekend I was down in Pemberton, followed the map provided by the local tourist centre pointing to Yeagarup Lake. To my amazement, there was no signage on the Vasse Hwy, noticed the map does show the turnoff was close to the track leading to Old Vasse Rd.
After arriving at the lake, had cuppa tea, then proceeded on the track to the beach, and almost immediately released tyre pressure as set on my tyre deflators @18psi and engaged 4WD low on my trusty '91 Nisaan Patrol wagon and locked my front wheel hubs.
To our surprise coming to a right hand bend, a huge sand dune behind big trees appeared and noticed the sand on the slope has already spilled onto the track. I stopped the car and checked it out. Hopped back into the car and started to proceed with heaps of confidence. But ... after about more than a dozen attempts to no avail, gave up but took some pictures of the dunes.
Later I saw one 4WD tray top had no problem climbing up this bend, but didn't get a chance to speak to the driver. On the way out I come across a short wheel base 4WD presumably didn't have any problem either.
Any comments as to where I've done wrong folks?

I was down to 10 psi to get up that dune, but then again I drive a 3 litre Hilux (won't pull the skin off a rice pudding)

itchywheels,

You mentioned you locked the front wheel hubs, but did you select 4WD LOW?

Sounds silly I know, but this little black duck was guilty of it once. Could have sworn I selected low ratio but after a couple of attempts of a "bump" in the track, I stopped and counted to ten then reassessed. NO 4WD LOW symbol showing.

Duh! It wasn't engaging cause one has to first put the Auto selector in Neutral or Park before changing from High ratio to Low.

Next attempt the Jack cruised over the obstacle without any hassle whatsoever.

Geez, I felt like a d!ckhead.

Thanks for your comments.
I did select the LOW range, and saw the light lit up in my Patrol.
As most suggested I should try the HI range 'cos it gives that extra momentum, and also lower tyre press to between 10-15psi.
Cheers..

Its called MOMENTUM .................

Will get you most places in and out of trouble

If your tyre pressure is correct - 18 should be OK but could go to 12 to 15

I would try High 4WD and get your MOMENTUM up

Yeah it's pretty common to use 10psi around Pemb, you see guys struggling all the time at 18-20psi.

I agree with the momentum theory, and am one of its most dedicated advocates/practitioners.

My last 3 vehicles, have all been airborn at one point or other (the new one is still being broken in).

The difficult thing getting up onto Yeagerup dunes....not much room for a run up...and the hill in question is on a bend to the right so a lot of your speed is washed away..or u end up off the track..

There is a less extreme track just on the right as you round the bend, gave the 4.0l petrol a boot full and nearly got airborne at the top, scared the bejesus out of the missus. I guess petrol thirst equals extra grunt. Tyres were only road radials and at 18psi

When we were at Pemberton in May this year the Yeagarup Dunes track was closed and so we had to settle for a trip down past Calcup Hill and on to Warren Beach. Dropped tyre pressures to 18psi on the sand. Pretty area and lovely isolated beach. Was quite a long climb back up the dune face with very soft sand.

I tend to use High Range for momentum. The 85kw diesel donk is a bit slow but we get there....and back!

Calcup hill was my first attempt at dunes/beach driving. Needless to say my sphinkter was well and truly puckering up the whole weekend. te he.

I notice from some of the replies that you say the track was closed, when I was down there in April I checked at the ranger station and the only reason the track had a closed sign was due to dangerous conditions at the river mouth. When told that I only wanted to visit dunes and not the river mouth the rangers were happy for me to drive around the sign. It pays to check with the rangers first.

Cheers

Thanks fellas for your comments.
I do agree with the momentum factor, in fact I did do 1 run-up.
Next time I'll try high range and go below 15psi.
