Can anybody out there recommend some areas in the South Coast & Illawarra or Southern Tablelands for a camping/4WD trek over 2 weeks departing from Melbourne. Spent years traversing the magnificent Vic High Country and now looking for a change. Intend to do it last 2 weeks of Jan 06....

Can reccomend Cooma up to bendethera (and cave) and then on to Braidwood. Check out Araluen, Captains flat and Majors creek. However having just read the date your going you will need 5 lts of water per person per day and 10 lts of aeroguard for the flies.

Once you've done the Brindabellas as previously advised, you can also swing east towards Braidwood, the Turpentine Road and the various NPs near the coast. A NP map will show all routes you need to consider, and Nowra has a great local map in their garages.

After that, trundle from Goulburn up to Wombeyan and via Mt Werong, Yerranderie, Dingo Dell, Kanangra Walls. Have a crack at teh Zigzags, then via BlackFellows Hand Trail west, appearing at Cullen Bullen.

From here you can go for a little bimble via the Bridle Track to Hill End. Drop back via Dandenong and you can trundle back to Melbourne via Ballarat, etc. Others can fill that bit in.

Hope this helps your mix'n'match.

Tuross Falls and Bendethera are really nice camping areas, but I suspect Bendethera could get a bit busy during holidays, being so close to the coast.

If you want to get (vehicle damagingly) serious I hear that Yahwal is the place to go.

Up the black top to Tumut to Long Plain, Broken Cart, Brindabella's through the ACT to Bendethra via Captains Flat and the Big Hole.

Out of Bendethra via Merricmbean Fire Trail, down to the coast. Head south doing a few of the tracks to Peak Alone Fire Tower. By then you could be almost ready to head home.
