Hi! we have a 3.1 tinne and a 4stroke 6hp yamaha motor the tinne will go on the roof what way up and how should we carry the outboard

Hi,
I think that one rule with an outboard motor is that the engine should always be kept higher than the gearbox. If inverted, cooling
water can flow up the exhaust and into the engine.

I asked the same question a year or so ago.
Lots of different opinions. But
mine was a 15hp 2stroke, ended up carring it on its back (prop down) inside a paded box on the tray of my ute. Plus there was then room in the box for life jackets etc.
Yours being a 4 stoke it will have engine oil to worry about , but I imagine the seals etc should stop any leakage.
P.s Have fun with it, fishing at
Karumba was patchy.

I saw a neat setup on a troopy in
exmouth...had dual spare wheel carriers on the back....one had a wheel...the other had the boat motor.
or if possible you could reposition your spare and use the wheel carrier.
doesnt suit everyone.

Tinny upside down, pointy end to front.
Outboard on prop and backrest with engine end higher. All in box that is filled with the safety gear.
Mine is a 15/2-.

I carry my 15HP outbourd on the rear on a converted rear wheel carrier. The conversion is just a square of wood bolted onto it in place of the normal studs. Works perfectly.

I carry my Outboard clamped upright to a bracket on the rear of the Camper Trailer. (gives me additional drive if stuck part way through a
creek crossing:-)
However, AFAIK all outboards can be laid flat providing the handle is underneath.
Most outboards have a diagram stuck on them showing how they may be laid down. This is the case for both a 15 HP Mercury 2 stroke and a Mariner 4 HP 4 stroke I own.
Before my Camper Trailer days, I travelled from
Adelaide to
Darwin, (and
all places in between) with the Outboard laying flat in the tray of an offroad trailer and sitting on a spare tyre carcase. Never had any problems with it.

mine in the tinnie - very simple and out of the way. The comments about making sure that the
water has properly drained is important (otherwise it will runn into the heads - don't want that).

I have a crate, can provide more detailed photos if you have an email address. I am happy - having just returned from 3 months traveling the
Kimberley - oh yes and the tosser worked great. The truth is when travelling with tinnies that they don't get used every single day so having them on the car and out of the way makes a lot of sense. When thcars get taller the tinnies get heavier it become problematic to merely lift the thing up.
Puting the motor in the boat cranks up the overall to close to 130Kg - little or no chance in manhandeling that weight safely. Winching it on and off was fantastic.

I too am keen on your setup with the tinnie tosser and motor mount. I keep going through the process of putting the tinnie on the camper and the wondering where the motor and safety gear goes. I had a look at a tinnie loader based on SS Rhino Racks (can't remember the name) but the same probs with the motor and safety gear.
I would love to look at the crate photos and tinnie tosser setup if you don't mind passing them on. I currently have a 2004 TD Prado that I am looking for options for.

I have a little bulldog collapsible trailer - but no-where to put it. We are starting to look like the Beverly Hillbillies - which defeats the purpose of going
camping a bit!!
Am now looking getting k&N Fabrications to make a adaptor to carry on spare wheel carrier.
At the moment, I carry motor and gear in large storage box on front of CT - keeps it all safe and
well - but always interested in different ideas.
