i've got a '94
mine had the head gaskets replaced at around 150,000k. i purchased it at ~178,000k. At 195,000k i have just spent ~$4000 rebuilding the motor as a result of blown head gaskets. the original repair was not done properly.
Mine had a full service history so i wasn't concerned about it.
Definitely check for evidence of head gasket repair and preferably who by. If it was a backyard job i would be concerned. A lot were done under a customer service pseudo recall.
Fuel economy is pretty average, around town i average ~14.7l/100k and on a trip about ~13l/100k playing 4x4 gives me around 17l/100k.
In comparison to a hj75 troopy it's a limo and handles like a F1 ;)
Not a huge amount of back
seat room for teenagers/adults.
I'm happy with
mine.

Hi there alby, yes as mentioned watch for blown head gaskets or previous repairs. Klms mentioned is about right for the heads to go. They are a comfortable vehicle to drive but long range driving can be a problem as they only have a small
tank 65l for memory and you will only get the consumption as mentioned above, sometimes even higher with air on and towing or pulling up hills etc. Watch out for blue smoke on start up if there is any keep walking as you will be up for big $$$$ if any thing goes wrong further down the track. Check the syncro's in the gear box if its a manual as some of the v6 4runners were driven pretty hard, check that is
well serviced but this still won't matter as far as the heads go cause they will/can go even with good service records as already mentioned, make sure it has had all the regular oil changes as these engines gunk up very quickly. Check under body properly (HANDS & KNEES) lay under it and check for dents things that have been repaired, fuel
tank, try and check between the guard and
tank to make sure it hasn't been shunted up wards and have just thrown on another guard to hide it. These are a great and comfortable 4wd just a problem with the heads and motor if it hasn't had oil changes. Little bit limited with wheel travel due to ifs but not a majot issue, dont have the same travel as say a patrol or L/ Cruiser with solid front end. If it looks suss then walk there is plenty of them out there in
sydney any way. Reason I know about these things is no I dont own one but worked for toyota for many years and was there when these things first come on the scene. Good luck with your choice, just remember dont buy if your not truly happy with it or you think something is not right. Also check dates on service book to make sure they tie in with speedo ask for receipts. Dont be worried about asking if they dont have them but will find them once you have bought the vehicle there is a fair chance you will never see them,Take Care Regards Vitara

I used to own one and had the following issues. The exhaust manifolds had to be replced due to "warping and cracking". As described above the head gaskets let go not long after I sold it and blew up the motor which was replaced and repaired under warranty as there was a factory recall at the time. This was only advised when the problem occured and the breakdown had occured.
Apart from that it was a pretty good car and could be thirsty if you drove it hard.
Mine had a bloody annoying rattle in the rear tailgate that turned out to be the locating clip that kept the tailgate hinges in place when in the closed position.
cheers

I am having the same problem right now with the exhaust manifold -( drivers side ) absolute pain in the behind to get them out - i am just 2 nuts short of totally removing it so i can inspect-In the process of trying to remove said manifold i have broken one exhaust stud and 1 of the rear nuts that joins the two manifolds up has locked up , so now need to gass axe that ( if i can get in there ) I have a milling machine so i can remachine the face if it has become warped. If people need some machining like this done , dont be shy to contact me !!
another point - there is a saftey recall on the 4runner at this moment - stearing arm can possibly fracture under excessive load -- ie stearing without the use of power stearing .( when stalled ect ) this is a free replacement - and you should recieve a notice if it has not been done to that vehicle already
