They've been around for a while... 20 + years, and haven't changed much, so they must be doing something right.

Then again most German globetrotters use Toyotas or Unimogs, what does that tell us :P

I met a German tourist over here some years ago (driving a Brits troopie) who owned a Gwagen back in der Chermany, and he was a bit disappointed with its reliability.

I'm sure I've seen a couple of those things before in Sydney a few years ago.

I have one, wow, a 300GD 5cyl diesel auto, great vehicle but not the fastest on the road, goes anywhere, and I have found it reliable, when parts needed not to expensive, eg oil filter just over $20.00, they are built like a tank, I am reluctantly going to sell it soon. Pete

My mate has one. 1983 model 300D 5 cylinder auto and has bought a spare one for parts as well.

He picked it up for $1500 with a cooked motor. The whole exercise ended up costing around $10,000 to get it back on the road.

Gwagen is built like the proverbial. They have been in use by the police and armies of Europe for the past 25 years or so. Has difflocks front and rear as standard and is pretty much a Go Anywhere vehicle. Normally slow on the road and you are busting to wind it up to 100kmh.

Tried to download the link but it would not open for me. Not sure what the 2006 model has as features.

Hi Rick

Stony's one got cooked by his missus and it has eventuallly been bought by my mate, the Camelman, for parts.

Stony has the twin cab, a 1976 Suzuki Bluesmoker and of course my old Rosie, the G60

Mark.
The G wagons we see are 25 years old and were under powered by todays standards but the landrover of that period was slower. The vehicles are not made by Benz, they are made to order by a Austrian company using mostly Benz parts, its up to the importer to spec the motor, in the states they usualy have large petrol motors. the 2005 G300 has a very good motor similar to the ML270 the 2006 will have a 3litre V6 140 kw. I saw an old G class stuck on the rocks at rainbow beach. was there for about half an hour as the tide came in before the tractor arrived to pull it out.

By the time the tractor arrived the water was half way up the windscreen.

This is no bull... and when it was dragged onto the beach the owner said i'll see if she'll start, it started first turn and he drove off the beach and home.

they don't get much tougher (or better sealed) then that!

cheers
