What Gauges in Order ?

Hi Folks,

I have been racking my brains on where to put some gauges (to read things like oil temp, egt's ect.) in my GU and just today stumbled accross a 3 gauge A Pillar mounted pod. That's the solution to my where to put these gauges, now my brain's working on what gauges to put in this cluster (sounds expensive already haha).

I have an inclination to get a pyro for egt's that mounts on the steering colomn, ala Roachie's setup. With this in mind what are the next most important gauges other people would suggest to be important?

Remembering there is mounts for 3 more gauges via this A Pillar pod.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Trevor.

Gi Day Trevor.

A long time ago, (longer than I care to remember) I was a speedway sprint car driver.

We didn't use gauges, (just large RED LIGHTS and LOUD alarms)

If you are busy, and who isn't ? gauges just don't cut it.

Go for:
1\.Low Oil pressure
2\.Low coolant
3\.High coolant temp.
4\.Low on ice or VB alarm

Others will have many different priorities, ie: #4 to #1 !

Thanks Eddy,

I have thought whether too much info (in the hands of someone like me) is more dangerous than beneficial. As a control freak I would prefer the gauges I think.

Regards Trevor.

Thanks Trucky,

Was thinking about the EGT gauge same as Roachie's (on streering colomn), Water Temp already in use down near cig lighter.
Boost was on my wishlist but that leaves 2 spots to fill, I was thinking of voltmeter (with switch for aux batt reading as well as start batt) and oil temp gauge to see what's going on there when I'm running hot ???

Cheers mate Trevor.

Trevor,
If you've already got the temp gauge fitted elsewhere, I'd going for Voltmeter, Boost and Oil Temp (as opposed to oil pressure). However, as mentioned above, the red light and buzzer option is good too and this is what I would also fit for Low Coolant (sponsor on EO is where I got mine from ....Engine Saver Low Water Alarms) as well as fitting a buzzer onto the existing Oil Pressure switch. Latter is a PITA at first, cos it screams every time you turn the ignition on until oil pressure builds up (basically it sounds the alarm whenever the idiot light on the dash is on).
Cheers
Roachie

Roachie,

They were the three gauges I was thinking of, but as usual I just wanted to confirm what other people thought useful.

Cheers mate, Trevor.

They dont tell you anything the standard one on the dash doesnt.

Truckster,
Mr Nissan kindly omitted to fit a voltmeter to the GU; that's why we're fitting them.
Cheers mate

Trevor,
Where did you get your moulded pillar mount? I was looking for one last week but couldn't find one to suit the GQ..... the ones I did find were crappy looking so I ended up using something else....

Brian,

I haven't bought it yet but found one up at Northside 4x4 in Caboolture, room for 3 gauges. They are an ARB distributor so maybe another ARB dist. on the coast may have them also. If you want I'll ask, if I get back up there next week, if they are made for GQ's.

Cheers Trevor.

Chaz recently posted a thread about his pillar pod - link a picture on his website, and said where he got it. Looks neat and convenient to monitor. We started with out ECG stuck onto the right hand side of the dash, then our son put the boost gauge just to the right of the radio - i would have to make a point of looking at it down there. We initially wanted to get a gearbox (auto) oil temp gauge, but when we took in to the Nissan dealer workshop, it came back with them saying it already has a gauge with a "light" - not much help when you don't know the temp is getting high until it is too high - we prefer gauges to lights. That would have been a good trio in a pillar pod.

Hi Motherhen,
My last 4x4 (Isuzu Traytop Truck), had a trans temp gauge that I fitted because I had similar concerns as yourself. However after having the gauge for a while, I soon found that the trans ran very cool as long as the converter was locked. My gauge went to 180c and I doubt if I ever saw it over 90c, and in fact it never got hotter than the motor. So for this reason, I haven’t bothered to fit one in the GU, and I think the over temp light will do the job of letting me know of it gets hot before it’s too late and damage is done. The only time it would, I imagine would be when driving long distances in soft sand, and if the light comes on it’s not too late to stop and cool things down.
I can’t seem to post the link to my page where the gauge pod is, but it can be found on my site.
Cheers
Chaz

Chaz,

That's exactly the same as the one I'm looking at. Where did you get it from as the mob where I found mine only has them in black and I would prefer the grey one that you have.

Cheers Trevor.

Trevor,
I ordered that one through TJM in Adelaide, who are our local agents for 4x4Megastores. They said that it had to come from their warehouse in Sydney. It came unfinished and black, so I had to drill the three holes and paint it in a vinyl enamel that was close to my original trim colour. Cost was $125.
Personally, I think that it was an expensive option, but the finished result isn't too bad for my effort, and I'm happy that someone bothered to make one up for a GU, because ther'e not available for most other models.

I think it would be worth paying $125 to achieve the end result. It looks neat, good place to monitor the gauges, and Chaz, you have done a good job in matching the paint - i didn't realise it wasn't the colour when you bought it.

Yeah the matt black one I found is $99 anyway so $25 more won't kill me to get the result I REALLY want.

Trevor, I have a two gauge pod on the dash of my GU, EGT and boost gauge. The pod was very cheap from Supercheap. I have posted a link to photo in a previous post, but can't find the bloody post or post a new link, sorry. John

G'day John,

I have come accross the pod I want, but am chasing in order of importance what gauges to fit. My thoughts are EGT's in a seperate position then in the pod, maybe Voltmeter- Oil temp- Boost. Just wanted to know if I have overlooked a very important gauge as I could drop any one of the above if I had to.

Thanks Trevor.

1.Boost
2.Oil pressure

3.Volts Or Fuel pressure or Air Induction Temp.

Personally don’t see the need for 2 Water temp gaugers you already have one same with Oil temp it’s not a race car nor is it operating at hight RPM’s for most of the time so cooking the oil is slim to none.

Exploder,

I already have a VDO water temp gauge down near the cig lighter. I do run at high RPM (3000rpm) all day as when I tow I don't use 5th gear. But I tow 90% of the time.
Thanks for the input Trevor.

the BLITZ range of guages are good. turbosmart make a guage that is also an electronic boost controller, on the face of the guage there is two buttons, to increase or decrease the boost i think its called the "e-boost"

Hi Trevor, contact Toohey on this site, he has a Navara and it's fitted with most guages available to the general public, if you need to know about location and which ones count then give him a yell.
I think there is still enough room for him to fit in the cab inbetween all the hardware...
