Hello and help to anyone out there !!
yesterday 20/01 2006 would have to be about the worst birthday that I have had in 37 yrs , my wife and I took the kids out for a drive as you do and as we were approaching the on ramp of the F4 in syd my wife attempted to select 3rd gear and a nasty grind sound came from the cruiser we pulled over and I had a go at selecting 3rd & 4th and as it would go in gear but would not engage then would be very stiff to get back out of gear 1st ,2nd,5th & reverse still work well, we luckily had just gotten back from south west rocks and my wife recalls having trouble selecting 4th , I dont know if this is a common problem or if anyone has had or heard of this but if anyone has any usefull input I would greatly appreciate it , this is a 1998 mod diesle with 190,000 km on the clock it had a new daiken clutch installed about 80,000km 4yrs ago I know that I must sound a little desperate and that would be because ( I AM!!) well thank you to all that have taken the time to read this post and I hope to hear from some of you soon .

Regards J,B.

JB,

If you've got the vehicle at home I'd drop the gbox oil and see what comes out. It should have a magnetic plug for the finer bits and then strain the oil for any big bits. If there is nothing untoward here then it might just be a selector lever on the side of the box or something else simple (well hope that is the case anyway).

Hi, I know that 100s have a problem with the shaft between the g/box and t/case the spline spins on the shaft but I think that this results in no drive at all. Toyota know about it and if pressed hard enpogh will repair with a superseeded part that has a longer spline that is made as part of the shaft.
I hope that it is only that.

Not an uncommon problem, i've got a friend with a 100 who is on his third gearbox, family car and no 5th gear towing. If in need of parts try Don Kyatt at 7hills as they have Tojo parts much cheaper than genuine.

GDay Johnny,,,,This may sound strange but try lifting the gear stick up and then changeing gears. The older Toyota gearboxes had a fault that occured sometimes in that the ball of the gearstck in the top of the box sat on a soft bush to dampen any noise or viabration. This bush sometimes breaks up letting the gearstick drop down enough to disengage from the selectors, the thin part of the stick is still in the selector gate allowing some gears to be selected with difficulty and sometimes trying to select two gears at once. If this is the problem the bush is easyley replaced from the top of the box. I hope for your sake this is the problem as a gearbox overhaul as mentioned is big bucks.

If you are getting 1 2 and 5 fine it sounds like something amiss in the 3rd and 4th selector hub. Probably a cracked hub or selector spring that holds the pawls.
Either way its internal and the box has to come out.
Where abouts in Sydney do you live as I have a workshop just of the F4. I don't generally do the gearbox's my self due to time constraints but have a very good person whom I sublet it out to.
Just let me know if you want their contact name. They are in Penrith.

Hi
If you have a standard 100 series, the box is renowned for this problem...as said earlier, Don Kyatt is your friend. Same happened to a friends 105
Andrew.

Diesel 1HZJ105 uses the smaller Prado R151 box, the 1FZE105 petrol has the bigger H151 which is also standard behind the TD 100.
