Does anybody know anything about the (what appear to be) pumping stations on Marrangaroo Creek, visible from
the Lost City near
Newnes?

If it is where I think that you are talking about, they are two dams to supply water to
Lithgow.
During the war
Lithgow had a shale oil refinery. This was to produce fuel. There was also the small arms factory in
Lithgow.
Lithgow was very important and to make sure that it would keep going even if
Sydney got invaded it had it's own
water supply. This is what you can see from
the Lost City.

Them's the ones. I've found a track on the topo map that should lead to the southern one, but there doesn't seem to be a track for the western one. I wonder if:
a) You can visit the southern one, seeing as how there's a road;
b) Same for the western one, providing there's a way down.

Just talked to a mate who lives in
Lithgow; the access road you talk about is through army land ; so no access to the public.

Bugger. That means I'm going to have to borrow a Humvee so I can go visit.
