Is it me and am I expecting too much from a retailer.
I want to purchase a 13x10 touring tent, I'm after the higher priced ones, over$1,000.
Most stores have them in stock but arent prepared to even consider putting them up.
I want to check the floor space and make sure the beds etc will fit, you cant rely on the manufacturers specs.
So am I being unreasonable to want too see something before I buy it.

Hi Dean,
No your not being unreasonable but good luck on getting them to put one up for you, retailers just aren't interested in offering a bit of extra service nowadays.

wonder how often they have put up tents in the past and no getting a sale. Time is money and I bet time spend at the counter selling chinese generators is much more worth while.
How many tents would they sell priced above $1000 ?

my 2 cents worth anyway........

If you're buying a 'top of the range' anything - I don't think a demo is a big ask! ;-)

Dean,

Ring and ask the people at Discount Camping Australia.
They have a fair sample of their tent stock erected.
(at least they used to at their old location)

They have now moved to 833 Main North Road Pooraka.

Let your fingers do the walking. Give them a bell on 8262 3399 and first check if they have the brand/model you are after and also if it is already erected.

They have a Web site Discount Camping
and sell Australia Wide.

Hi Dean,

Check out Universal Canvas at 98 Regency Road, Ferryden Park, 8445 9333.

No association but I know he has some tents erected in the showroom, I found him to be a nice guy, nothing too much trouble..could find some other goodies there too.

Products are good.

Has a reasonable website too.

Regards

Dean

You are not expecting too much. It is shame you are not in Melbourne as there at least two places that are absolutely fantastic to deal with. Good luck, and I certainly wouldn;t buy a temt without seeing packed and unpacked.

You MUST see it erected. I was in the camping section of KMart the other day and noticed that they had several tents erected. I was horrified!!! Although from the size of the boxes you would expect to be buying normal size tents the erected tents were only about 50 cms long by 20cms high!

I called an assistant and asked for them to be moved to the pets section, I might get one for my daughters pet rat.

If a store, won't put up a touring tent, of all things, then spend your money elsewhere.

When I bought my Turbo 300, I asked if we could erect it, stow it, then I erect, and stow. It all happened, and I bought it.

Seems ridiculous, that they won't erect it.

Is it a camping store, or a large generic retailer? No names, but if it's a dedicated camping store, then I'm surprised, to say the least.

I can understand them not erectin it. Knocking in the tent pegs plays havoc with the floor covering.

Hi Dean,

I'm with you ... call them up prior and tell them what you are buying, that you want to see it erected and make a time to do it. If they won't don't waste your time.

I'm not that happy with the customer service experience in the big red stores despite the amount of stuff I buy there.

I have found the customer service experience at the cold white flaky stuff's much better.

No attachment to either store.

Ciao for now
Andrew.

When we bought our Black wolf tent ($999 plus a bit more for other gear that we found!!)) I rang first to see if I could put it up before we bought it...they said to come in one morning when they were setting up eg 9am and it was quiet....this doesnt suit us because of hubbies work hrs so about a week later we rocked up without ringing and asked to see it put up. We helped put it up and pack it away - they were great and even shouted us a coffee next door so we could "think about it" but before we had walked out the door we knew we were going to buy it....

There is good customer service out there - if they dont want to help then tell them that they have just lost a big sale and walk out!It stirs them up like crazy!!

yes we had the same sort of problem, luckerly ours wasn't as expencive but still adds up, we were told that if we didn't like the setup of the tent that we could bring it back or take it into the store were we would be holidaying and get our money back or exchange for a different model as there were none on display, so we thought we had nothing to loose and bought the tent- first night the poles broke and we also had some other problems so while we away we went into the store we were told to with no luck at all and then as soon as we returned from our trip went into the store to be told that he wasn't going to help us that the tent it's self wasn't faultly, we did quite a bit of jumping up and down with no luck, never again will we buy a tent without checking it out fully first. it just goes to show not to believe everyone that some are only out to make a quick buck and will lie.
