Alright guys you've convinced me - my fantasies of a high lift jack and chains (read into that what you will :) are no more, it's a winch for me!

Not spending $760 on a Tirfor so it's about $400 for a TJM or ARB or Big Haul or A Nobel plus a snatch block. Does anyone have opinions on these winches? They all meet an Oz Standard and all will pull 2.5T (probably all come out the same factory in China!?).

Thanks in advance - again.

Mike Harding

PS. And _don't_ start on the "you should buy an electric winch" line, pleeeease :)

Mike,

I have used a Big Haul with great success. We use one at least once a month when we do driver training to haul one of our vehicles up a slope. Work well and have not let us down.

However you would be better off with a electric winch.
Now before you go off, I finished with that line and didn't start with it.:-))

I have a Big Haul and the quality is fine. Having never used it in anger I'm still thinking electric. Extra weight on the front, maintainance and extra wiring etc just to get others out of trouble...had one before but never used it ..maybe I'll just stick with the hand winch.

Footloose ,think youve got it in 1 ,have asked the question before on how often people actualy use their vehicle mounted winch for self , seems very very few ,more often for extricating others ,hand winch may be more work but is a lot lighter and imo a more versatile tool.

Good call

ive just done the same and brought a hand winch. My thoughts were that it is probably a little more versatile than a lift, atleast the winch can get me out of the places the lift couldnt get me.

Lets hope we never use them LOL
