Just fuelled up with diesel down the road and it was $1.43.
Somebody mentioned to me yesterday about the cost of fuel in NZ, so I have just checked the net.
This article was printed on 3/7/06.
'This afternoon 91 octane was selling for 157.7 cents a litre, 95 at 162.7 cents and diesel remained unchanged on 116.9 cents as there was no excise change on it.'
Just who the hell is pulling the wool over whos eyes here?

Kiwi tax is ?cents/km+$?/transaction.
If you buy 5000km you pay 5000x3c(roughly)+fixed fee.(About $12 from memory)
If you buy 20000km you pay 20000x3c?+fixed fee as above.
Variations are in the chosen Gross V Weight and this is where people often trip themselves up. 4Runner/Surf weighs less than 2 tonne so a 2 tonne sticker will do. Wrong. Stick 2 bums in seats, fill it with fuel and a bit of gear and you're over 2 tonne. Mr. Plod weighs things up, says "yer over weight" and yer in deep doodoo's.
Tax evasion?? and it can get real untidy from there.
Hope this is clear enough but not a difficult system, just different from life on this island.

This sounds like the most convoluted system...that only a politician could think up...which means that we're next to get this wonderful sounding tax system!! ;-)
What ever happened to the good 'ol days, when they put a tax on the fuel, because that determined how many klms you travelled, and also 'encouraging' people to invest in more fuel efficient vehicles?????
I suppose that's too simplistic....I'd never have made a good poli anyhow!

Nothing convoluted about it, and actually stems from the "good old days" when diesel use was in heavy traffic and off road (agriculture etc.) Since the influx of light diesel in the past 30 odd years they opted for this tax system in preference to paying at the pump.
Either way you pay your tax before you burn.
