Just fuelled up with diesel down the road and it was $1.43.
Somebody mentioned to me yesterday about the cost of fuel in NZ, so I have just checked the net.
This article was printed on 3/7/06.

'This afternoon 91 octane was selling for 157.7 cents a litre, 95 at 162.7 cents and diesel remained unchanged on 116.9 cents as there was no excise change on it.'

Just who the hell is pulling the wool over whos eyes here?

Yes but don’t you pay a road tax in NZ with a diesal and depending on how many K’s you do a year that then dictates how much tax you pay.?

Exploder, yeah, your right about the tax for distance travelled. I didn't know anything about that until I just checked on the net.
It seems that if you buy a 'licence' to travel say about 24000 kms it will cost about 6 cents a litre on 12 ltr/100k cruiser/ patrol type vehicle.
It's a bit of a strange system by the look of it on their tax info sheet, but maybe only because we are not used to that system. Aparrently you buy a licence for the distance before you travel.
You choose the distance and the fee is a sliding scale, e.g. more distance on the licence = bulk buy savings.
My maths may very well upta *%#*, I flunked kindy, but it still seems a lot cheaper than where I am.

Fair enough Footie, but that's not necessarily the norm. In fact, the avg mileage per annum in th UK is higher than here.

Kiwi tax is ?cents/km+$?/transaction.

If you buy 5000km you pay 5000x3c(roughly)+fixed fee.(About $12 from memory)

If you buy 20000km you pay 20000x3c?+fixed fee as above.

Variations are in the chosen Gross V Weight and this is where people often trip themselves up. 4Runner/Surf weighs less than 2 tonne so a 2 tonne sticker will do. Wrong. Stick 2 bums in seats, fill it with fuel and a bit of gear and you're over 2 tonne. Mr. Plod weighs things up, says "yer over weight" and yer in deep doodoo's.
Tax evasion?? and it can get real untidy from there.

Hope this is clear enough but not a difficult system, just different from life on this island.

This sounds like the most convoluted system...that only a politician could think up...which means that we're next to get this wonderful sounding tax system!! ;-)

What ever happened to the good 'ol days, when they put a tax on the fuel, because that determined how many klms you travelled, and also 'encouraging' people to invest in more fuel efficient vehicles?????

I suppose that's too simplistic....I'd never have made a good poli anyhow!

Nothing convoluted about it, and actually stems from the "good old days" when diesel use was in heavy traffic and off road (agriculture etc.) Since the influx of light diesel in the past 30 odd years they opted for this tax system in preference to paying at the pump.

Either way you pay your tax before you burn.

Perth today 139.9 cents for diesel.
Last Easter it was up to 175.9 at Nullarbor, OUCH $260 in one tank full.
On the way back I fuelled up at Ceduna, and did not stop for fuel until Norseman.

Pitty that it is costing more and more to travey with a 4x4.

actually mate, just looked on that Shell website for current prices and Cloncurry, Isa and nearby towns are no dearer than Sydney. In fact cheaper in some cases. Having said that, I'm sure Doomadgee, Booroloola etc won't let me down. Probably over $1.50

"Who is to blame for this?"
I heard somewhere that the falling australian dollar is to blame.
You know, just like when the Aus dollar was going up the fuel prices fell.
