Hi, all,

I intend to drive to the Cape departing from Cairns approx. on July 22nd (incl. CREB track and maybe OTL).

If time allows, I would like to make a diversion on the way back to Dunbar HS / Normanton, maybe a bit of the gulf road.

I come from France and travel on my own with a well equiped rent troopy with roof tent. I have already some outback experience (20.000 k off the bitumen in Oz), and am looking for nice people who might share parts of the trip.

Cheers

Eric

Most of the roads are pretty knocked about by the late "wet" up there this year.
Keep an eye on this site :

and stick to the recommendations or else you might finish up as croc food.

Hi Eric,
I just returned to Sydney from up there on the 1st July 2006. The CREB track is still closed. You can get from Cairns to Cooktown via Mareeba and you can get to Karumba with no problems. Lake Tinaroo was 50% open but the camping areas were very soggy and chopped up. Anything North of Lakelands is closed with the Weipa road closed in at least three places. Best estimates we got in the last week of May from the Engineers working on the roads were maybe end July limited access. Kurrumba was great. Both location and weather. Caught more fish in one hour at Kurrumba than Three weeks at Cairns, Tinaroo and Cooktown.

The Cook Shire website shows that, as of 6/6/06, the Peninsula Developmental Road all the way from Laura to Weipa is open.
