Hi all, how old is too old to turbo a 2.8 diesel hilux. Ours is 91 model and has done 340000km. It has been serviced at 5000km intervals.

It blows the occasional puff of smoke when changing gears under load (ie up hills) and seems to be blowing a very small amount of smoke (not enough to tell the colour). I noticed the faint smoke in the headlights when I was driving behind the ute. Does the smoke indicate that work needs to be done before turboing???

Ours was a 94 with 190000kms on the clock when I bolted on a turbo.Wanted more go for towing our camper trailer.Fitted a DTS turbo, already had a 2 1/2 exhaust and H/D clutch, got injectors rebuilt, checked tappets and finally got pump timed/tuned by the pros once fitted.Stand alone it went great, gear higher everywhere but with trailer on was still struggling on hills, foot flat still most of the time(Tassie is pretty hilly)and in the end it didnt do what I wanted, sold it and bought a Cruiser.
Give it a good check, compression, valves, pump and injectors and if all is good and you are not after a huge power differance do it,have heard of one done at those kms and is still going at nearly 500000kms.

A mate bolted an ARB turbo on to his '99 3lt Hilux.

The little truck went well but he could not keep the temperature down and had to back off down to 80kmh on hot days in the far North. This frustated him severely...lol

In the end he traded it on a 4.2lt Nissan

Similar story as above. Fitted a denco at 185,000kms. Turbo was great but the engine temp was a problem in mid 30 plus temps when towing, mostly up hills. Sold the hilux at 215,000 and bought a TD '03 Pardo.

G'day M&M

We had an 89 2.8 4runner with 405,000kms on the clock when I put a DTS turbo on along with a 2 1/2 inch exhaust and h/d clutch & pressure plate.
In 2003 I replaced the radiator with a new one (small leak top of core) in preparation for trip to Cape.
Towed C/T to cape in 03, Darwin & Kakadu in 04 plus other 3-5 day trips inbetween and never had any overheating problems.

Sold vehicle in 2005 with 519000kms and at the moment she is still going strong with, I think, 539000kms on clock.
Motor has never been touched.

Safe travells
